THE REAL REASON WILDLIFE REHABBERS ASK YOU NOT TO FEED THAT BABY…

It’s not because we want to hog all the fun for ourselves, I promise. It’s because wild orphans aren’t typically healthy enough to digest food, when they are found.

Many are hypothermic. The body can’t even handle water when its core temperature is too low. All energy is going to crucial body functions in that state. If the body has to divert energy to digesting, - it will likely be fatal.

Many orphans are very dehydrated. Animals can’t digest properly when they are dehydrated. The body pulls water into the intestines to aid with digestion. If there isn’t any water to pull from, this could cause a domino affect of problems.

All wild baby animals require a specific diet and that diet generally isn’t available in local stores. Feeding the wrong formula could cause an upset stomach or worse.

All baby animals need specific amounts of formula calculated by their body weight. The percentage differs depending on the species.

Not every animal can drink from a bottle. The correct instrument must be used to prevent aspiration and over feeding.
Bring us a thin, dehydrated, hypothermic animal and we can probably save it. Feed that same animal before you bring it to us…there’s likely nothing we can do to bring it back.

So PLEASE, don’t feed any wild orphans that you have found this baby season. Keeping them warm is a huge help until you find a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.

Friends, please help us educate the public about having tree work done during squirrel baby season. A litter of five has now been dislodged from their nest and mom has not yet returned.

We realize sometimes dead trees are a safety hazard, but if not, PLEASE wait to have tree work done in November, December and early January when there aren't likely to be active nests in the trees.

The tree workers you hire should check for nests before beginning, and if they don't make that a regular practice, they are being negligent. Please make it clear that you expect them to do this so that you can reach out to your nearest rehabber for guidance before orphans are created.

We can all do better.

Successful exclusion, trapping, and reunification of a momma Northern Raccoon and her littles recently in Asheville. I have good video, but FB will not allow posting of pics and videos on a page, so hopefully the upcoming story path becomes clear through the pics. Initially, I was called over because mom (unknown as a mother at the time) had been seen scaling up the window and onto the roof, then disappearing through the hole. Then alot of noise started being heard. I went over and set the game cam and found that she had a definite pattern of coming and going. And also heard the unmistakable sounds of infants. So, set a trap hoping to catch her for safety reasons as no one needed to be on the roof closing off access and have her appear. I set the trap. Drove home. Then got a message she was already in it. One hour later. So next day went on the search for the babes. After some sheetrock cutting and insulation pulling I got the first out. Then spent the next few hours making a temp closure apparatus for the hole and boroscoping, listening, and looking for any more. Nothing. Drive home. Then an hour later, got a message another little made itself known through the hole I'd cut. So next day attempted to release mom and the littles together. Mom hauled butt. So set the kennel with the little and baited the location so mom would be drawn in not only from her littles but the
scrumptous
bait too. It drew huge
momma sow bear and her 4 cubs in that had never been seen there before. Thankfully the homeowner had the forethought to bring the littles
up the eve before from where I'd set them and the bait. Fast forward. Next day, the littles were set on the deck and mom showed up and gathered both.

As promised, I told little B he could be there when I set the opossums free. This eve the opossum posse made minced meat out of the saying "Land of the Free" as they ran to independence and little B got to see it all. Happy heart and Happy 4th to all! ❤️
