In Memory of Douglas L Cordo
🇺🇸🫡🇺🇸🫡🙏🙏🙏
On August 19, 2011, at 0936 in the morning on Route Snake in the Zabul Province of Afghanistan, 20-year-old Doug Cordo of New York was killed in action while serving his country.
Doug was driving the Mobile Gun System STRYKER — an eight-wheeled armored vehicle equipped with a devastating 105mm cannon. That morning, his vehicle was struck by an enemy blast. Even after Doug was killed and SGT Rutkowski was medically evacuated, the violence did not stop. As the destroyed vehicle was being recovered, it was struck a second time.
This is the brutal reality of war.
Memorial Day is not just about flags, cookouts, or a long weekend. It is about young men like Doug — only 20 years old — who never got the chance to grow old, have children, or fully live the life ahead of them because they answered the call to serve something greater than themselves.
And behind every fallen hero is a family forever changed.
Doug was his mother’s only child.
In a single moment, war did not just take a Soldier from this nation — it shattered a mother’s heart. A pain no Gold Star mother should ever have to carry. While the world moved forward, she was left with an empty chair, unanswered calls, silent holidays, and memories frozen in time at 20 years old.
This Memorial Day, remember the cost of freedom.
Remember Doug.Remember his mother.Remember every family carrying the weight of sacrifice long after the battlefield falls silent.
The fallen are never truly gone as long as we speak their names and live lives worthy of their sacrifice.
Rest easy, Doug. Your brothers will never forget you.
