Today, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposes to protect the tricolored bat (๐˜—๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜บ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ด ๐˜ด๐˜ถ๐˜ฃ๐˜ง๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ท๐˜ถ๐˜ด) as an Endangered species. Bat Conservation International fully supports using the full power of the Endangered Species Act to protect the tricolored bat. Listing this bat as Endangered is critically needed.

The tricolored bat was once common throughout the eastern United States but has lost more than 90% of the known population from the disease White-nose Syndrome.
BCI was part of the team working with the North American Bat Monitoring Program (NABat) to provide the USFWS with the critical data needed to assess the status of the species and inform the decision.

Protection under the Endangered Species Act is the wake-up call that galvanizes our focus on the conservation actions needed to save and recover this species. Only by working together will we save this species from extinction.

This big-eared beauty is a little-known Florida bonneted bat'. As the most endangered bat species in Florida, its population is believed to only be in the hundreds. Researchers have found that this species is particularly hard to study because they tend to travel at heights above traditional mist netting setups, the method used to capture bats. However, we do know that the bonneted bat is vulnerable to habitat loss, habitat alteration (like the removal of old trees with cavities, or buildings with spaces suitable for roosting), and pesticide spraying for mosquitoes.

Remember to never handle bats. I am licensed, trained and vaccinated.
Philip and Louis have very different personalities. They are both big gentle giants, but Phil is much more happy to just chill in the background. Very strangely, he loves getting cuddles in his back! Most bats hate being on their back.

Through acoustic monitoring, surveys, installing bat boxes, and testing new artificial roost designs, the Florida Power and Light Bat Lab at Zoo Miami has created collaborative research initiatives and applied conservation management efforts across Miami-Dade County and South Florida to support the Federally Endangered Florida bonneted bat.
This new report highlights the efforts and achievements over the last three years.
