Our Mother's Day REDO Week starts TOMORROW!

REDO = Retail | Experience | Dine | Orion, and we're asking our community (and neighboring communities!) to come out and pour some LOve into our local businesses who missed out on revenue during Mother's Day weekend and the following week due to the Water Main Break.

Shop, dine, and schedule local, and share your photos with to be entered to win prizes, swag, gift cards, and more. Some of the donated prizes include gift baskets from McLaren Oakland and Texas Roadhouse, plus a gift certificate to MI Prime Health for 4 sessions (1 month) of Red Light Therapy. Thank you to these businesses for their generosity!

"Lead with kindness, serve others, and invest in the community around you. I believe small, intentional actions—done consistently—can create meaningful, lasting impact over time." (Alaina Campbell | Owner of Cookies & Cream and Sprout Bake, and one of the founders of the The Illuminators - Downtown LO Volunteers)

When it comes to charting the people who make the Township shine, Alaina Campbell is a NorthStar in so many ways. In fact, shining light (and inspiring others to so) is one of her most recent projects through The Illuminators Volunteer Group.

"Helping launch the Illuminators came from a desire to give back to the community and to spread positivity. In a world where we often see so much negativity, it feels more important than ever to intentionally shine light on the good. When we focus on what's positive and uplifting, it has a way of pushing out the darkness.

The Illuminators are rooted in that purpose: creating a welcoming, vibrant downtown through volunteerism, small acts of kindness, and community pride. Being an Illuminator is about how you show up each day. It can be as simple as welcoming someone new, supporting a local business, attending community events, or offering encouragement to a neighbor or entrepreneur. It's about creating a positive ripple effect where small acts of kindness and connection build a stronger, more vibrant community.

At its heart, it's about building connections, encouraging one another, and helping people feel a true sense of belonging here.

That's what anchored my husband and me here in 1997. We moved from Jackson when he took a job in Troy, and while we explored other nearby communities, the moment we discovered Orion, we knew we'd found our home.

Our journey since then has been shaped by a deep love for community and connection. Professionally for me, that started with my time as Executive Director of the Orion Area Chamber, where I developed a passion for supporting local businesses and bringing people together.

That passion carried into opening Cookies & Cream, which was always intended to be more than just an ice cream shop. It's a place where families gather, kids play, and memories are made. One of the most rewarding parts of owning the business has been mentoring high school students through their first jobs. I love helping them develop confidence, responsibility, customer service skills, and an understanding of what it takes to run a small business. Watching young people grow, learn, and discover their potential is incredibly fulfilling, and I hope those lessons stay with them throughout their lives.

Sprout Bake grew out of the necessity of food allergy needs and my love for baking and teaching others how to create simple, wholesome food at home, especially through sourdough and sprouted ingredients.

I love baking sourdough. In the winter months, I'm grateful to teach classes and share that passion with others. It's incredibly rewarding when someone sends a photo of the bread they made at home—it's a reminder that simple skills can have a lasting impact on health and confidence and help people feel empowered. While most of my classes take place during the colder months, I'm excited to offer a rare summer sourdough class through Orion Township Parks & Recreation on June 18 at 6:30 p.m. for anyone interested in learning the basics of making wholesome, homemade bread [Registration linked in comments.]

My days are filled with moments that reflect what I value most: connection, community, and time with the people I love. At any given time, you'll find me teaching sourdough classes, scooping ice cream or organizing an event at Cookies & Cream, or relaxing on our pontoon boat with my husband, kids, and friends. For me, my perfect day in Orion includes any combination of these things or, as a cherry on top, one of our downtown festivals or events.
When our kids were younger, we loved taking them to the Lions Jubilee to ride the rides. Now, I still look forward to events like the Lake Orion Art & Flower Fair and Dragon on the Lake, walking through vendor booths, supporting small businesses, and connecting with other entrepreneurs. There's just something special about the energy of those days.

Years from now, I hope I've left a legacy of kindness, encouragement, and community support. I'd love to be remembered as someone who helped others take the leap into entrepreneurship and believed in people before they believed in themselves. If I've played even a small role in helping others build something meaningful or feel connected and valued, that would mean everything."

Miracle League of North Oakland celebrated Opening Day of its summer season on Saturday, June 6, with special guests from a galaxy far, far away! While our Star Wars visitors have returned to their corner of the universe, the Force remains strong with these all-star ballplayers, turning what looked like a rainout sent from the Dark Side into a magical night for baseball.

Team Support Specialist Susie Glasgow recalls driving to the game while it was "pouring 'barrels' (not buckets)," fully prepared to call the game off if conditions hadn't improved by the time she arrived. As she exited I-75 at Joslyn, she received another call warning that a storm was on the way. But as she turned off the exit ramp, out popped the sun.

"With the assistance of our friend Kevin, who vacuumed up all the puddles on the field, the game began only a few minutes late and it was a perfect night for baseball. The game ended and the crowd cleared and the rains came down...followed by this beautiful rainbow [shared in photos]. YES, I BELIEVE IN MIRACLES, they happen here all the time," shared Susie.

The magic continued on the field as one player, Brandon, hit an out-of-the-park home run and got to take home his home run ball after the game.
If you've never been to a game before, mark your calendar ASAP. Attending, or better yet, volunteering, will be the highlight of your summer. And yes, you just might experience a miracle.

Volunteer opportunities are still available! Sign up to be a player buddy or help out at concessions here:

Note: These are just a few photos from Sunday and yesterday's games. Follow Miracle League of North Oakland for more photos throughout the season!

: Charting the constellations of people who make our Township shine.

Today's bright light is recent Lake Orion High School graduate and outgoing Youth Advisory Council (YAC) chair Kaushika (Shika) Veeramasa. This fall, Shika will venture beyond Orion Township to study Physiology at Michigan State University, a big step toward her goal of pursuing a career in medicine.

Throughout her time on YAC, Shika embraced opportunities to lead, serve, and build connections within the community. Looking back on her experience, she shared:

"I wanted to join a club where I could be involved with my community and connect with people who share similar values. YAC allowed me to fulfill both. I got to experience taking the lead in and collaborating with my peers on various activities for the community. I treasure the fun we had planning those events and the time spent with community members, building new connections and friendships."

Whether it's joining a new club, trying out for a new team, or exploring a new opportunity, Shika encourages others to embrace new experiences:
"Step out of your comfort zone sometimes because that's when you learn the most. Don't be afraid to reach out and try new things because everyone will be new to something once in their life."

We've been inspired by Shika's leadership and passion for serving her community, both this year and throughout her journey as a young Orion resident. We know she'll continue to shine at MSU and beyond!

06/02/2026

When a water main break forced Orion Township into a State of Emergency on Mother's Day, the impact extended far beyond our water system. Many local businesses lost out on one of the busiest shopping and dining days of the year as celebrations were canceled, postponed, or moved elsewhere.

On Mother's Day and in the days that followed, many restaurants, stores, and other businesses temporarily closed or reduced services, sacrificing revenue to help preserve and restore our water supply for the good of the community.

Now it's our turn to show up for them.

Orion, it's time for a REDO:

Retail.
Experience.
Dine.
Orion.

Orion Township, Downtown Lake Orion, Orion Area Chamber of Commerce, and The Illuminators are declaring June 14 a Mother's Day Do-Over and encouraging residents to shop, dine, and explore local that day and throughout the week that follows. Together, we can help restore some of the sales, visits, and opportunities local businesses missed when one of their brightest days of the year was unexpectedly dimmed.

Whether it's rebooking a brunch, buying a gift, scheduling an experience, or simply choosing to spend local, every visit makes a difference.

The water emergency may be behind us, but our Orion spirit continues to illuminate what makes this community special; we love, support, and show up for the people and places that make Orion home.💚 ✨

P.S. Show us your REDO! Share a photo of yourself, your friends, or your family supporting local businesses using for a chance to win gift cards and other prizes.
