: charting the constellations that make the Township shine. Dazzling us again from the Orion Township Parks & Recreation constellation (and protecting our canopy while defending our land from invasive plants as he does), it's Orion Township's Naturalist, Jarred McPherson:

"As a member of one of the local Scout troops, I grew up exploring Fort Pontiac, running through the dense wilderness of Camp Agawam, and spending nights tucked away in the cabins, listening to the sounds of the wilderness. When I started working for Orion Township, I realized just how many memories were tucked behind every nook and cranny of those woods.

Before working for Orion, I spent two summers with our neighboring community, Oakland Township. During that time, I learned from outstanding people and gained a deeper appreciation for the pride that comes with being a steward of the community. I feel so fortunate to have found a place here where I can take pride in serving the remarkable people who make up Orion Township.

Outside of work, you can find me hiking, backpacking, fishing, foraging for morels, or taking a stroll through a park. I spend most of my time outdoors, but when I need a break from the tick checks and mosquito bites, I'll sure enough be found reading a book or showing friends a movie I've already seen several times."

Currently, Jarred is leading the Township's charge against phragmites and hopes Orion Township property owners will join him on the front line by participating in the 2026 Phragmites Program!

The program provides a no cost treatment estimate to help landowners manage phragmites on their property.

Application Deadline is Monday, August 31 by 3 p.m.

Please join us tonight at Township Hall at 6:30 PM for a town hall meeting on the November 3 police and fire millage proposals. Every question will be answered. If unable to join in person, you can watch and ask questions on the Orion Township, Michigan page.

In addition to the Safety Millage Townhall tomorrow (Tuesday, August 25), several of our local leaders will host Township Talks this Friday, August 28, including Supervisor Chris Barnett, Clerk Julia Dalrymple, Treasurer Matt Pfeiffer, Oakland County Sheriff's Office Orion Substation Commander Lt. Zehnpfennig and Orion Township Fire Department Fire Chief Allen.

To make sure residents have every opportunity to learn more and engage in the conversation about the proposed fire and police millage renewals, we’re planning a series of opportunities to gather, ask questions, share concerns and hear responses.

These conversations will vary in format, day and time with the goal of accommodating as many schedules as possible.

Our first opportunity for group discussion is a Townhall conversation on Tuesday, August 25.

: charting the constellations of people who make the Township shine. Our next two stars are part of the Orion Township Parks & Recreation constellation. This week, we're featuring twenty-five year Orion Resident and Recreation Programmer Regan Slocum:

"I grew up participating in dance, gymnastics and cheer. My lightbulb moment for wanting to work in the fitness industry happened in high school when I was going through physical therapy for a back injury. It was eye-opening to learn how exercise could alleviate pain. I wanted to help others improve their health through physical activity.

My fitness career started in East Lansing as a student and cheerleader at MSU. I got my bachelor's in Exercise Science and worked as the programming director at the MAC. In Orion, my fitness career started as a personal trainer at GLAC where I became Director of Personal Training within a few months. From there, my role evolved into Fitness Director. My background also includes a stint with the Detroit Pistons Workforce, a stunt and tumble team that performed during home games.

Now, as a Recreation Programmer, my focus is on health and fitness. I plan all things health and fitness at the recreation center, as well as events in our parks, including Dragon Dash, Dragon Trails Tri and its children's races, the Hatchling Hustle and this year's new Fledgling Fleet, and Winterfest. I've really enjoyed the transition, and seeing the facility updates has been refreshing. I've learned a lot over the past few years, and something I'm most recently proud of is passing the Certified Parks and Recreation Professional exam.

My favorite part of transitioning from a Fitness Director to a fitness-focused Recreation Programmer has been that my purpose now feels uncontained. Rather than being within the walls of a gym, it's my job to bring fitness activities everywhere in the community. The parks and trails in Orion Township set us apart, and it's been so fun to create events like the triathlon. This is such a unique event because we really embraced the parks' natural features (in Camp Agawam, Bald Mountain State Park and Orion Oaks County Park!) to create an adventurous course. You can't help but smile when you're running through the woods, jumping over trees! I'm excited to see some returning athletes this year. I think that's a sign that people enjoyed the event if they're willing to come back.

The social aspect of fitness and programming is probably my favorite part. I've seen so many friendships form over the years, and I've met some amazing people along the way. We have so many resources in our area to help our community maintain active lifestyles. Whether you join the Orion Recreation Center or another fitness facility, take part in free community events like our group triathlon training events, join the Lake Orion Bike & Adventure Co. free community rides, or find a running or walking group, there are so many options. Just find what works for you and don't wait another day.

See this as your sign to make the call, sign up for the race, hire the trainer, show up to the class or meet up with the group. Recruit a friend or family member if that will help you stay accountable. You never know where that first step might take you."

Our lifeguards are students, young adults, aspiring doctors, entrepreneurs, educators, local athletes, artists, neighbors—the list goes on. But more than anything, they're our heroes.

Choosing to work as a lifeguard means choosing to serve and protect your community. It's purposeful work that requires training, confidence, teamwork, a sharp skillset, and the ability to respond when it matters most.

Because as a lifeguard, you show up ready to make a difference when it matters most.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the August 4 Primary Election. Your vote matters, and we appreciate every resident who took the time to make their voice heard.

As you know, the two public safety millage proposals on the ballot were not approved by voters. We understand that many residents have questions about what this means for Fire and Police services in Orion Township.

We want you to know that we are listening. Your votes, comments, emails, conversations, and feedback are important as we evaluate the future of public safety in our community.

We invite all community members to attend a Special Meeting of the Orion Township Board of Trustees tomorrow, Friday, August 7, at 4:00 p.m. at Township Hall. During the meeting, Township officials will discuss the current funding outlook, answer questions, and provide an opportunity for residents to share their thoughts and concerns.

This is your community, and public safety is a priority for all of us. As we move toward the November election and plan for the next fiscal year, we remain committed to working together with our residents to determine the best path forward.

Please note:

We understand that a 4:00 p.m. meeting time may not be convenient for everyone. Our options for meeting times were limited by conflicts with other community meetings and events, and we selected a time that we hoped would allow more people to attend than the alternative while also allowing the board to vote on General Election ballot language before Tuesday’s deadline.

Whether shared during the meeting, through comments afterward, or directly with Township officials, your input is an important part of the conversation moving forward and we want to reiterate that all feedback is valued.

If you are unable to attend in person, the meeting will be broadcast live on OrionONTV and will also be available to watch afterward at your convenience.
