We are excited to share with you our next event at the History Museum! Join us for an engaging, in-depth discussion and presentation by Dave Fadden and Curt Stager about their new book, The First Adirondackers!

The First Adirondackers challenges the widespread, long-standing belief that the Adirondack uplands of northern New York were uninhabited before the arrival of European colonizers. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Through local indigenous traditions and supporting findings by natural science, authors David Kanietakeron Fadden and Curt Stager expose, document, and honor the long human presence in the Adirondacks, helping not only to redefine what it means to be an Adirondacker, but also contributing to a more complete understanding of America itself.

With two incredible presenters full of information and excitement around the topic, this is bound to be a presentation you won’t want to miss!

We came across this photo from our collections and feel it is perfect to share for a Monday Moment! An epic snow race is ensuing in this wintery picture from 1940-1950! You can see three horses, sulkys, and drivers racing on an outdoor track near the LP Airport and Horse Show Grounds! We know that the front rider is Favor Ransier Smith, the second rider is either Hurley Devlin or Vern Devlin, and the third rider is either Norm McCasland or Verne Devlin! What a time this must have been! Do you remember races like this?

The summer might be drawing to a close, but that doesn't mean we are slowing down here at the Historical Society! We are super happy to announce the return of our annual Lake Placid Historic Scavenger Hunt happening September 17th from 5:00 to 7:30PM!

Organize your own transportation, put together teams of 2-4 people, and plan to meet at The History Museum at 5:00PM to get your clues, where you will then follow the clues around town to find secret historic spots... After you explore, there will be food, drinks & prizes at the museum! We hope to see you for this wonderful annual event!

Anybody yearning for the snow-covered mountains? Seems like we are beginning to get those chilly nights, which only means one thing... We are getting closer to our beautiful winter season! This week's postcard is from an unknown date, but it captures a glimpse into our poetic snow! The only clue we have is written on the postcard, "LPC. A tool, if you will, it’s no longer needed, but can still be a thrill. Perhaps you have a new one hidden in your shed because it’s definitely not under your bed!
