Lake Township Volunteer Fire Department Chief Churchill—we’ve got you covered on the weekend Chiefs Challenge! 🚑

Labor Day weekend means heavier traffic, cookouts, boating, swimming, outdoor activities, and celebrations. Our crews have already been busy responding to multiple crashes across Newton County this weekend.

With the extra activity comes more opportunity for one poor decision or moment of distraction to cause a serious injury.

Please keep these safety reminders in mind:

🚗 Expect heavier traffic. Buckle up every passenger, slow down, and put the phone away.

💧Remember it’s supposed to be HOT this weekend! Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.

🍺 Choose a sober driver before anyone starts drinking—don’t wait until it’s time to leave. You don’t wanna spend your weekend with our friends at the Newton County Sheriff's Office.

🌊 Wear properly fitted life jackets around boats and open water. Children require active supervision, even when other adults are nearby.

🦴 Take falls, hard landings, head injuries, severe swelling, deformities, or the inability to use an injured arm or leg seriously.

🔥 Keep children, pets, loose clothing, and flammable materials away from grills, grease, fireworks, and open flames.

The goal isn’t to avoid celebrating—it’s to make sure everyone gets home safely when the weekend is over.

Enjoy your Labor Day weekend, Newton County. Celebrate responsibly, look out for one another, and make safety part of the plan.

🚑 TODAY MARKS AN IMPORTANT DAY IN THE HISTORY OF NEWTON COUNTY EMS!

When you or someone you love calls 911, you deserve the best care we can possibly provide—regardless of how far away the appropriate hospital may be.

Effective today, September 1, 2026, at 7:00 a.m., Newton County EMS officially begins an exciting new chapter focused entirely on better caring for the residents, families, and visitors of Newton County.

Working closely with our new Medical Director, Dr. Nate Marcinkowski, we have developed new medical protocols grounded in evidence-based research and best practices. These protocols were designed specifically for the realities of caring for patients in our rural community, where transport times can sometimes approach or exceed 60 minutes.

For us, these protocols are more than new procedures on paper. They are our way of advocating for our patients and addressing areas where we believe prehospital care has not always fully met the unique needs of Newton County.

What does this mean for you and your family?

Most importantly, this change does not mean you will suddenly be transported to a different hospital the next time you call 911. Although Dr. Marcinkowski is affiliated with IU Health, patients will not automatically be transported to IU Health Arnett.

Your hospital preference will continue to be considered alongside your condition, medical needs, and the capabilities of the receiving facility when determining the most appropriate destination.

What is changing is the care we can provide inside the ambulance.

Our new protocols give our BLS and ALS crews additional skills, medications, and treatment options, including improved pain-management options, enhanced sedation management, prehospital antibiotics, and more advanced trauma care. These expanded capabilities will help our paramedics and EMTs better assess, treat, comfort, and stabilize patients during longer transports.

You will not notice a change in how Newton County EMS responds to emergencies or the number of ambulances available. What you will experience is a better-equipped team with more tools and treatment options available to care for you and your family before arriving at the hospital.

We sincerely thank the Newton County Council, the Newton County Board of Commissioners, Tom Fentress, and Methodist Hospitals for supporting our mission and believing in this journey.

We are incredibly proud to welcome Dr. Nate Marcinkowski as our Medical Director. Since day one, he has been hands-on, accessible, and supportive of our goals for the people we serve.

We also thank our entire NCEMS team for reviewing protocol drafts, sharing their insight, and training diligently for this transition.

Most importantly, we recognize EMS Director Mark Humpfer, who has worked tirelessly at the forefront of this project. His leadership, persistence, and commitment to improving emergency medical care in Newton County helped turn this vision into reality.

This change was made for you—our residents, our visitors, our neighbors, and our families. It represents our promise to continue learning, growing, and fighting for the level of care our community deserves.

🚑 AN EXCITING NEW CHAPTER FOR NEWTON COUNTY EMS!

Today, August 31, marks Newton County EMS’ final day operating under the medical direction of Franciscan Health Crown Point.

After more than 30 years of continuous medical direction, our agency has officially developed its own set of medical protocols—designed specifically to better address the needs of Newton County and the residents we proudly serve.

Beginning tomorrow, September 1, at 7:00 a.m., our oncoming crews will begin operating under these new protocols and the medical direction of Dr. Nate Marcinkowski.

This transition has been a long time coming and represents an important milestone in the continued growth of Newton County EMS. We are incredibly excited about this next chapter and the opportunities it will provide to advance the care we deliver throughout our county.

We sincerely thank Franciscan Health Crown Point for more than three decades of guidance, partnership, and support.

🚌 SCHOOL’S BACK — SLOW DOWN & STOP! 🎒

As students across Newton County head back to the classroom, that means school buses are back on our roads and kids are back at bus stops.

When you see a school bus with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended — STOP. 🛑

Those extra few seconds could protect a child crossing the roadway.

🚸 Remember:
• Slow down and stay alert around school buses and bus stops.
• Watch for children who may unexpectedly enter the roadway.
• Put the phone down and eliminate distractions. 📵
• Never attempt to pass a stopped school bus when its stop arm is extended.
• Give buses plenty of room and be patient as they make frequent stops.

We know mornings can be busy and everyone has somewhere to be—but no destination is more important than getting our kids to school safely.

⛈️ WEATHER AWARE: ANOTHER ROUND OF SEVERE STORMS POSSIBLE TODAY ⛈️

Yesterday’s storms were tough on communities across Northwest Indiana, and unfortunately, it looks like another round of severe weather could be coming our way today.

The National Weather Service is forecasting another line of storms capable of producing damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and localized flooding, with the potential for severe weather across Northwest Indiana including Newton County.

Newton County EMS encourages everyone to stay Weather Aware throughout the day:

📱 Stay informed — Keep an eye on local forecasts and make sure emergency alerts are enabled on your phone.

🏠 Know your safe place — Identify where you will go if a Severe Thunderstorm or Tornado Warning is issued. Put as many walls between you and the outside as possible.

🔦 Be prepared for power outages — Charge your phones and have flashlights, batteries, medications, and other essentials readily available.

🚗 Avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather — Never drive through flooded roadways or around barricades.

🌳 Watch for storm damage — Treat all downed power lines as energized and stay away from damaged trees, utility poles, and debris.

🤝 Check on your neighbors — Especially older adults, those with disabilities, and anyone who may need assistance receiving weather alerts or getting to a safe location.

Yesterday was a reminder of just how quickly conditions can change. Let’s be prepared for whatever today brings. 🎒 BACK-TO-SCHOOL SAFETY: Is Your Child’s Emergency Information Up to Date? 🚑

School starts in just a few days! While you’re finishing those last-minute back-to-school preparations, take a few extra minutes to get your child’s emergency and medical information together.

New clothes? ✅
School supplies? ✅
Backpack? ✅
Updated emergency information? 🤔

It’s something that can easily be overlooked, but if your child suddenly becomes sick or injured at school, having accurate information readily available can make a BIG difference.

🏥 Before the first day, make sure your child’s school has current information regarding:

• Medical conditions and significant medical history
• Allergies
• Current medications
• Updated parent/guardian contact information
• Additional emergency contacts
• Any special medical needs or instructions

This information helps school nurses and staff provide appropriate care and gives responding EMS crews valuable information when every minute matters.

📱 Have a student who carries a cell phone?

Now is also a great time to set up or update their phone’s Medical ID or Emergency Information. Many smartphones allow first responders to access important medical information and emergency contacts from the lock screen without needing to unlock the phone.

Parents and older students should make sure this information includes appropriate medical conditions, allergies, medications, and emergency contacts—and remember to update it whenever something changes.

⏰ The first day of school will be here before you know it. Take a few minutes now to gather and update this information. It’s one small back-to-school task that could make a BIG difference during an emergency.

🚑 DID YOU KNOW? | The History Behind Our North Station

Have you ever driven by and wondered why the Newton County EMS North Ambulance Station is known as the Peter J. Bisbis Memorial Ambulance Center?

Peter J. Bisbis was a dedicated public servant and advocate for the people of Newton County. He served as a Newton County Commissioner from January 1, 1983, through December 31, 1990.

During his time in public service, Bisbis was instrumental in the expansion of the Newton County Ambulance Service, helping strengthen emergency medical services and their ability to serve communities throughout the county.

In recognition of his countless hours of service and dedication to Newton County, the Newton County Commissioners officially dedicated the ambulance base located at 9951 N. 100 E. in Lake Village as the Peter J. Bisbis Memorial Ambulance Center on September 8, 1998.

Today, more than 25 years later, the station remains an active and important part of Newton County EMS. It is still home to Medic 3 and Medic 4 and serves as our administrative office for our records, billing, and Administrative Assistant.

Every emergency response that begins at our North Station continues a legacy built by those who believed in providing reliable emergency medical care to the people of Newton County.

Peter J. Bisbis helped expand the foundation upon which Newton County EMS continues to grow today. His legacy lives on through the station that proudly bears his name and the people who continue its mission of service.

🎒 ONE LAST WEEKEND BEFORE BACK TO SCHOOL! 🚌🚑

The backpacks are getting packed, alarms are getting set, and summer break is quickly coming to an end!

Wednesday, August 13th is the first day of school for both North Newton and South Newton Schools. As families enjoy one last weekend before heading back to the classroom, Newton County EMS wants to share a few simple reminders to help everyone start the school year safely.

🚌 Drivers — school buses are back! Slow down, leave extra time for your morning commute, and always stop for buses displaying flashing red lights and an extended stop arm.

🚸 Watch for students. Kids will once again be walking, biking, and waiting near roadways and bus stops. Stay alert, especially during the morning and afternoon hours.

📵 Put the phone down. A few seconds of distraction behind the wheel can have lifelong consequences.

🎒 Parents — update emergency information. Make sure your child’s school has current medical information, medications, allergies, emergency contacts, and any special medical needs.

📱 Update their Medical ID. If your student carries a cellphone, make sure their emergency contacts and Medical ID/Emergency Information are set up and current.

⏰ Plan for a different routine. Earlier bedtimes, earlier mornings, more traffic, and busy schedules can take some adjustment. Give yourself—and your kids—a little extra time.

This weekend, enjoy those last few days of summer break, get everything ready, and help us make August 13th a safe start to the new school year!

A clean truck is a happy truck. 🚑✨

Every morning, our crews begin their 24-hour shifts by checking their ambulances, ensuring every piece of equipment is ready, and taking the time to wash and detail their assigned units.

To the average person, a washed and waxed ambulance during an emergency may not seem important. To us, it’s about pride and ownership in the equipment we’ve been entrusted with. A clean, well-maintained ambulance represents our team, our professionalism, and our commitment to excellence before we ever arrive on scene.

When we take pride in our equipment, we’re ready to take care of our community.
