It is with heavy hearts that the Lake Wales Police Department announces the passing of retired K9 Officer Badge on August 25, 2026.
Badge was born on August 2, 2011, and began his career with the Lake Wales Police Department on November 8, 2012. Through hard work and specialized training, he became a certified K9 Officer on December 23, 2013, and began serving alongside his handler, Chad Landry. On October 26, 2015, Dale Hampton became Badge’s handler and continued serving alongside him until his retirement.
Throughout his years of service, Badge demonstrated the courage, loyalty and dedication that define our K9 officers. He served our department and community with distinction, helping locate numerous missing persons, assisting with significant drug seizures and playing an important role in the apprehension of violent offenders.
Badge’s accomplishments extended far beyond our community. He competed nationwide through the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA), earning numerous awards and recognition throughout his career. Among his accomplishments, Badge was named Top Patrol Dog and Top Narcotics Detection Dog — a testament to his exceptional training, skill and partnership with his handlers.
Badge was more than a working dog. He was a partner, protector and beloved member of the Lake Wales Police Department family.
Following his retirement, Badge was able to spend the remainder of his life where he belonged — at home with his original handler, Chad Landry, surrounded by love, companionship and the peaceful retirement he so greatly deserved.
Badge even made one final visit to the Lake Wales Police Department to say his goodbyes.
His service may be over, but his legacy will never be forgotten. His paw prints will forever remain on the hearts of the officers, handlers and members of our community who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.
