The Lake Wales Police Department has seen a recent increase in vehicle burglaries in the area. We are asking citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity involving vehicles by calling 911 immediately. Many of these crimes can be prevented by taking a few simple precautions:

- Always lock your vehicle and double-check that it is secured before walking away.
- Do not leave valuables in your car (phones, wallets, purses, jewelry, etc.)
- If valuables must remain in your vehicle, make sure they are hidden and kept out of plain sight.

Members of the Lake Wales Police Department were treated to lunch courtesy of Frank Battaglia, owner of Universal Weapons. In honor of the recent National Police Week, Frank wanted to show his appreciation for the officers and staff serving the Lake Wales community.

This is not the first time Universal Weapons has supported the department and its members. Last year, the business donated a handgun to the Lake Wales Police Officers Association for the week-long raffle held for officers during National Police Week celebrations.

On March 17, 2025, a victim stated she observed a TikTok advertisement for a vehicle from what she believed to be Red Auto Center, a legitimate dealership located in Lake Wales. The victim contacted the account associated with the advertisement and communicated with the suspect through TikTok messaging and phone calls. After seeing a vehicle she was interested in, she was instructed to send a $950 down payment via Apple Pay and Zelle to secure the vehicle.

When the victim later arrived at the dealership in Lake Wales, dealership staff informed her that the TikTok account was fraudulent and not affiliated with the legitimate business. Since the initial report, sixteen additional cases with nearly identical circumstances have been reported bringing the total number of known incidents to seventeen cases since March 17, 2025.

The fraudulent accounts closely mimic the legitimate dealership's online presence by copying photographs, using similar account names and creating email addresses that closely resemble those used by the legitimate business.

Here's how to protect yourself:
- DO NOT send deposits via Apple Pay, Zelle or other peer-to-peer payment apps to secure a vehicle
- Verify the dealership by contacting them directly using official contact information
- Be cautious of deals or requests made solely through social media
- Visit dealerships in-person before making any payments
- Report suspicious accounts or activity to law enforcement

If anyone is experiencing similar frauds, please reach out to the Lake Wales Police Investigation Division or visit the Lake Wales Police Department.

The Lake Wales Police Department K9 Division recently hosted an interagency K9 training in Lake Wales. The training consisted of article searches where canines were tasked with locating several different objects containing human odor using their sense of smell. Officers and deputies then moved on to various deployment scenarios involving K9 units, including traffic stops, narcotics searches, locating missing persons or suspects, and more.

K9 units train at least once a month to maintain the performance, discipline and obedience of their canines. Participating agencies in this month’s training included the Lakeland Police Department, Bartow Police Department and the Hardee County Sheriff's Office.

The Lake Wales Police Officers Association (POA) has commenced a week-long celebration in honor of National Police Week. Officers and staff are being treated to food, raffles, and more thanks to the generous support of local businesses and citizens. Donations to the POA non-profit help fund charitable events, community outreach programs, officer appreciation events, and more.

National Police Week is a collaborative effort among many organizations dedicated to honoring America’s law enforcement community. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and designated the calendar week in which May 15 falls as National Police Week. The observance recognizes law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty while protecting the safety of others.
