When two different dolphin species cross paths off Costa Rica, the chatter in the water begins to change.

The larger, more aggressive bottlenose dolphins often harass the smaller Guyana dolphins during these mixed-species encounters. Yet, instead of exaggerating their own species' unique calls, the dolphins modify them .

The whistles recorded during these meetings share an intermediate frequency and structure—distinct from the sounds each species makes when alone.

Biologist Laura May-Collado was surprised by the discovery: "The signals recorded during these encounters became more homogenous" .

Whether the smaller Guyanas are changing their tune in submission, or both sides are genuinely attempting a shared tongue remains unknown. One thing is clear: beneath the waves, evolution's great chatterboxes are trying to find a way to speak to the neighbors 🐬🗣️
