Drowning at Shasta Lake; Public Urged to Take all Safety Precautions

On Monday, April 6, 2026, at approximately 11:22 AM, Shasta County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a report of a 5-year-old missing juvenile in the water at Turntable Bay, Shasta Lake.

Deputies, along with a large contingent of allied public safety personnel including CAL FIRE, the U.S. Forest Service, California Highway Patrol Air Operations, and medical personnel, responded to the scene and, upon arrival, determined the juvenile was not wearing a life jacket and had entered the water. Before the parents could remove the juvenile from the water to put on his personal flotation device, he had gone underwater.

A search effort was immediately initiated; unfortunately, at approximately 12:33 PM, the juvenile was located and recovered with the assistance of the Shasta County Dive Team.

The juvenile was released to the Shasta County Coroner’s Office for further investigation; however, no foul play is suspected. The juvenile’s identity is not being released at this time.

The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office, on behalf of all public safety agencies involved in this incident, offers sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the juvenile and to all those affected.

This incident serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly a routine outing can become tragic. The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the public that, although we have seen warmer temperatures this spring, water temperatures will remain extremely cold for the foreseeable future. Additionally, the public is encouraged to check the condition of all boating equipment, including safety gear, to ensure it is in proper working condition.

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Susan "Suzie" Smith. Suzie sustained injuries in the tragic REACH 5 accident in the Sacramento area earlier this week.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Susan "Suzie" Smith's loved ones and colleagues. Suzie's dedication and compassion touched countless lives. Her loss is deeply felt by our community and will be remembered through the lives that she cared for, and for the example she set in service to others. 🙏🏼

Our REACH family is devastated to share that Susan “Suzie” Smith has passed away from injuries sustained during the accident involving helicopter N414RX on Highway 50 on Monday night.

We will remember Suzie as a pillar of the EMS and healthcare community who saved countless lives by delivering compassionate care in their darkest hours. We hope she is remembered for the light she brought to every call, every shift, and every patient she blessed with her care.

We grieve Suzie’s loss with her family, friends, colleagues and the entire community that she faithfully served. Her impact will be felt for years to come through the lives she touched, the teams she strengthened, and the compassion she embodied. Thank you for keeping Suzie’s loved ones and our REACH family in your thoughts and support for our team during this difficult time.
