🎉 One Year of Hope. One Year of Impact. One Community Making It Possible.

What happens when a community decides that women and children experiencing homelessness deserve more than a temporary place to stay?

Hope happens. Stability happens. Home happens.

In the first year of our Talbot House Ministries Center for Women & Children , 180 women and children found safety, nourishment, support, and a pathway forward. We provided 21,900 nights of safe housing, served 65,700 meals, and 85.9% of families completing our program achieved a positive housing outcome.

Behind every number is a mother rebuilding her life. A child sleeping safely. A family finding its way home.

And we did not do this alone.

We celebrate and thank GiveWell Community Foundation, United Way of Central Florida, Publix Charities, Polk County Sheriff’s Charities, Polk County Government, City of Winter Haven, Homeless Coalition of Polk County, our community and faith partners, volunteers, and our incredible private donors. Your generosity is transforming lives.

We estimate the Center generates $3.28 million+ in community value and public-system savings — approximately $5.46 for every $1 invested.

But the work continues every single day. Keeping these doors open takes all of us. We invite you to invest in this mission, tour the Center, meet our team, and see firsthand what your support makes possible.

🌟Volunteer Spotlight 🌟

Today, we celebrate Ms. Latonya, one of our incredible Solutions Program volunteers at Talbot House Ministries of Lakeland.

Latonya, an honorable veteran herself, has been sharing her skills with our programs veterans and other residents through résumé development, employment preparation, and navigating job opportunities. Her patience, compassion, and willingness to serve are helping individuals take meaningful steps toward employment, stability, and independence.

Our team describes Latonya as a true Godsend—and her service reminds us of something important: everyone has something they can give.

Maybe you know how to cut hair and can help someone feel confident before an interview. Maybe you can mentor, teach financial literacy, lead a Bible study, provide employment coaching, teach a life-skills class, share a professional skill, or simply encourage someone who is rebuilding their life.

You don’t have to do everything. Bring the talent God gave you, and use it to serve someone else.

Thank you, Latonya, for showing us what that looks like. 🧡

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others.” — 1 Peter 4:10

At the Talbot House Ministries Center for Women & Children , our work is about more than providing a safe place for families—it is about creating opportunities for children to learn, grow, play, discover, and thrive.

Today, we celebrate Oliver Aponte, our Early Childhood Educator, and the meaningful enrichment happening every day with the little ones who call our Center home. Through developmentally appropriate learning, creative play, early literacy, social-emotional activities, and one-on-one encouragement, our children are building skills and confidence during an important season of their lives.

We are especially grateful for the grant supporting Early Childhood Education in Honor of Mabel Schaefer’s Legacy through the GiveWell Community Foundation. This investment allows us to strengthen early childhood enrichment for children experiencing homelessness while their mothers work toward stability, employment, housing, and a new beginning.

For us, breaking the cycle of homelessness also means investing in the next generation. Every book read, number learned, picture colored, milestone celebrated, and moment of encouragement plants another seed of hope.

You can be part of what is happening at the Center for Women and Children. Give, volunteer, visit, or simply help us share the story.

Thank you to the GiveWell Community Foundation for helping us ensure that even during one of the most difficult chapters in a child’s life, there is still room for learning, laughter, childhood, and HOPE. ❤️

JUST IMAGINE.

Last week, around 10:30 at night, a desperate mother called one of our leaders.

She and her daughter were staying in a local motel.

They were hungry with no food or money.

There was no food in the room. No money to buy dinner. And by noon the next day, they were at risk of losing the motel room—the only place they had to sleep.

This mother is working everyday from 4:00 am to 9:00 pm. She makes deliveries to earn enough money to pay for the room one day at a time.

Work. Deliver. Pay for another night.
Wake up and do it all over again.

That night, we answered the phone.

A hot meal was delivered directly to their motel door. Crisis counseling was provided to them.

Thank you to the generosity of some of our loyal private donors for the “Diversion and Prevention Funds”, Talbot House Ministries stepped in to cover the motel for the next couple of weeks, giving this mother something incredibly precious:

Time.

Time to work.
Time to breathe.
Time to figure out what comes next.

But we also had to tell her something heartbreaking.

We don’t have an open room for her and her daughter at our Talbot House Ministries Center for Women & Children . And right now, permanent housing isn’t immediately available.

So tonight, I want you to do something.

Just imagine.

Imagine opening your refrigerator and there is nothing there.

Imagine your child telling you she’s hungry, and you have nothing to give her.

Imagine knowing that at noon tomorrow, someone could knock on the door and tell you that you have to leave.

Imagine having a job—and still not being able to afford a home.

Imagine putting everything you own in your car.

Imagine sleeping in that car with your children.

Imagine moving from couch to couch, motel to motel, never knowing where your family will sleep next week.

This is homelessness, too.

It doesn’t always look like someone sleeping on a sidewalk or in a transitional overnight program.

Across our community, families are living in cars, motels, temporary rooms, encampments and on someone else’s couch. Some of these situations are not fully reflected in HUD’s narrow definitions and traditional homelessness counts, which means the numbers alone can never tell the whole story of what our neighbors are experiencing.

These are mothers. Fathers. Children. Veterans. Seniors. People with jobs. People who were making it until one setback became two, and two became three.

This isn’t simply a homelessness crisis.

It is a crisis of people struggling to afford the basic necessities of life.

Housing.
Food.
Transportation.
Childcare.
Utilities.

And sometimes the difference between having a place to sleep tomorrow and having nowhere to go is one unexpected bill, one missed paycheck, one broken-down car, one illness, or one increase in rent.

At Talbot House Ministries of Lakeland, we cannot solve every housing crisis overnight.

But we can answer the phone.

We can bring the meal.

We can help keep a family from sleeping in their car tonight.

We can stand beside a mother while she fights for something better for her child.

And when our community stands with us, we can do more.

Tonight, when you walk into your home, turn on the lights, open your refrigerator and climb into your bed, take one moment and…

Just imagine.

Then remember that somewhere in our community, a mother is doing everything she can to give her child those very same things.

Our neighbors are struggling. They need us.

If this story moves your heart, please help us be there when the next call comes.

They served our nation. Now it is our turn to serve them. 🇺🇸

Every night, more than 25 Veterans call Talbot House Ministries of Lakeland home. These are men and women who once answered the call to serve our country—and today, some need their community to stand beside them.

We are incredibly grateful for City of Lakeland Commissioner Terry Coney, who has faithfully taken time to visit, encourage, and support the Veterans participating in our programs in a weekly basis. That kind of presence matters. Sometimes service is simply showing up, listening, encouraging, and reminding someone that they have not been forgotten.

Homelessness does not discriminate. Across our community, individuals and families are often one unexpected setback away from losing their housing—a medical bill, reduced work hours, rising rent, a vehicle repair, or another emergency that creates a domino effect.

We also see working individuals and families coming to Talbot House for meals because the money they save on groceries may be what allows them to make their rent payment and remain housed. Preventing homelessness is just as important as helping someone overcome it.

Today, we are inviting Veterans organizations, civic groups, businesses, churches, military families, and individual Veteran supporters to join us. Come serve a meal. Encourage our Veterans. Sponsor a need. Volunteer your time. Bring your organization for a service project. Most importantly, help us build a community that honors those who served not only with our words—but through our actions.

They stood for us. Let’s stand for them.

Our friends at The Estates at Carpenters, are a beautiful example of that kind of love. With patience, compassion, and countless hours of work, these incredible create mats for the cots used by our overnight guests at Talbot House Ministries of Lakeland.

These are more than mats. Every knot, every weave, and every finished piece carries a message: “You matter. You are seen. You are loved.”

Every night, more than 300 individuals and families call Talbot House Ministries home—people walking through some of the most difficult seasons of their lives. And because of compassionate partners like The Estates at Carpenters, they are reminded that the Body of Christ surrounds them with dignity, kindness, and hope.

To our wonderful mat makers: thank you. Thank you for giving your time, your talents, and your hearts to people you may never meet. Your hands are serving others, but your ministry reaches far beyond the mats you create. You are helping us make Talbot House a place Where Lives Find Hope.

And there is room for YOU in this mission. Whether you volunteer, organize a service project, provide needed supplies, give financially, or simply step forward and ask, “How can I help?”—your gifts can make a difference in someone’s life.

We are incredibly excited to share that one of the women currently residing at our Talbot House Ministries Center for Women & Children , was among the 30 individuals who received a vehicle through CareerSource Polk, remarkable partnership with Regal Automotive!

For a mother working toward stability and independence, reliable transportation can change everything. It means getting to work. Taking children to school and appointments. Pursuing better opportunities. And, most importantly, moving forward with greater independence and confidence.

This is what removing barriers looks like.

We are deeply grateful to CareerSource Polk, CEO and our Talbot House Ministries of Lakeland dear friend and fearless advocate Stacy Campbell-Domineck, Regal Automotive, and everyone who made this extraordinary opportunity possible. You didn’t simply provide vehicles today—you provided pathways forward.

At Talbot House Ministries, we are privileged to walk alongside women and families as they rebuild their lives. Moments like this remind us that transformation happens when an entire community comes together and says: We believe in your future.

To our resident: keep moving forward. One milestone at a time. We are cheering you on!

Sometimes the road to a new beginning really does start with a set of keys.

Yesterday, our Talbot House Ministries Board of Directors came together for our Annual Board Summit—a time to reflect, strengthen our vision, and prepare for the work ahead.

Strong organizations require more than a mission. They require engaged leadership, shared accountability, courageous decisions, and a unified commitment to those we serve.

A special thank you to Dr. Craig Collins and Sterling Creative Consulting, for facilitating and guiding today’s conversations. Your expertise, insight, and commitment to strengthening leadership helped challenge us to think strategically about where we are today—and where we are called to go next.

As we look toward the future, we remain focused on one purpose: ensuring that Talbot House continues to be a place Where Lives Find Hope.

We are grateful for every board member who gives their time, expertise, and heart to advance this mission.

One Mission. One Vision. One Talbot House.
