The RCD of Greater San Diego County and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) are looking for feedback to help inform local priorities here in Southern California. There are two ways to participate:

2. Join us in person or virtually for the NRCS Local Work Group meeting at the San Diego County Farm Bureau's Escondido office on Tuesday, August 18th at 1:00 PM

📢 California FarmLink is now accepting applications for Growing on Solid Ground: A Land Access Course, a new 9-week hybrid program designed to support farmers and ranchers in the San Diego region with securing long-term access to agricultural land.

Launching in September 2026, participants will gain practical tools, technical assistance, peer learning opportunities, and professional connections to help navigate land access planning, water access, climate smart farming practices, and land tenure.

We are about halfway through the current session of our Ecological Farmer Training Program! 🎉

This past Saturday, our cohort of 12 students learned more about efficient irrigation practices and drought tolerant crops, like the Green Dent corn pictured above, with instructor The Farmers' Shadow at The Farmers’ Shadow! This was followed by a community garlic harvest celebration and potluck 🧄✨

Know someone who loves monarchs and has a car? Send this their way! 🦋✨

Each year since 1997, volunteers take part in an intensive community science effort to track overwintering western monarchs and their habitat.

We’re looking for participants who can commit a minimum of 12-15 hours each fall and winter. Volunteers attend 1 virtual and 1 in-person training, follow survey protocol, and electronically submit data that will inform monarch conservation efforts.

Early-season count:
Oct 17 – Nov 1, 2026

Mid-season count:
Nov 14 – Dec 6, 2026

Late-season count:
Dec 26, 2026 – Jan 10, 2027

Saturday, September 26th

We're pleased to announce that the has awarded $601,577 to the RCD of Greater San Diego County to manage a planning grant to protect four species of threatened and endangered butterflies in Southern California: Hermes copper, Harbison’s dun skipper, Quino checkerspot, and Laguna Mountain skipper.

In recent years, these four butterfly species have faced extreme population declines due to increasing threats from habitat loss and degradation driven by invasive nonnative plants, wildfire, and increasing climate variability. Without immediate conservation efforts, they are at risk of becoming extinct. This project lays the groundwork to restore populations.

The project brings together key partners to create multi-species conservation that can be achieved though future implementation grants. Partners include the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the San Diego County Department of Parks and Recreation, the San Diego Management and Monitoring Program, AECOM, and the Western Borderlands Ecology Group.

Together, we are working to develop a restoration approach to address threats and secure the necessary permits to implement habitat restoration and translocation.

As we navigate a period filled with challenges for both agricultural producers and residents of California, it is crucial to encourage our elected officials to allocate funds to essential programs that serve as a crucial support system for farmers and those experiencing food shortages.⁠

What is CUSP? ⁠

The California Underserved and Small Producers Program (CUSP) is designed to facilitate support for small and medium scale California farmers through direct relief grants. Relief grants are distributed to provide financial support due to drought, extreme weather, and other climate impacts in California.⁠

So far, CUSP has:⁠
🧑‍🌾 → Provided reliable safety net amid escalating climate disasters⁠
💰 → Awarded over $24.5 million in direct relief to thousands of farmers⁠

Big thanks to everyone for coming out to celebrate San Diego's native pollinators! 🐝

Each year on the first full week of May, when native bees and butterflies are in flight, the San Diego Pollinator Alliance puts on a week of ✨free✨ events all about our native pollinators.

This year, over 500 community members of all ages and abilities joined over 15 events to delight in the pollinators native to our region, learn how to protect them, and gain a better understanding of their importance. 🦋

Thank you to the many organizations who hosted incredible events that inspire us to continue protecting our beloved insect, bird, and mammal pollinators. 🦇

We're already looking forward to San Diego Pollinator Week 2027! 🐛

The San Diego Pollinator Alliance (SDPA) is a group of organizations and agencies working together to protect pollinators in San Diego County. The SDPA aims to increase native pollinator habitat and awareness about pollinator-friendly practices through outreach, education, and on-the-ground programs. The SDPA includes scientists, conservation orgs, educators, and stewards. The RCD of Greater San Diego County is a founding member of the SDPA.

Happy International Day for Biological Diversity from all of us at RCD of Greater San Diego County! 🌿🪲✨

Biodiversity refers to the number and variety of plant and animal species in a region. This variety contributes to healthy ecosystems that support food security, clean water and air, disease control, and so much more.

San Diego County is the most biodiverse county in the continental U.S., and we don't take that for granted!

Today and every day, we celebrate our region's biodiversity and commit to caring for the local wildlife and communities that share this home, whether it's improving the health and resilience of forests, creating pollinator habitat on farms and ranches, or working with experts to protect our most threatened species.

The theme of this year's International Day of Biological Diversity, "Acting Locally for Global Impact," reminds us of the positive change we create together.

This is an 8-week, hands-on course where you’ll learn ecological farming by actually doing it—on working urban farms, with guidance and support along the way. It's a space to learn, ask questions, and get comfortable working with the land.
