🔥 Prescribed Fire Monitoring Update – Near Chiloquin, OR 🔥

Smoke will continue to be visible in the Chiloquin community and along Highway 97 and the Sprague River Highway.

The images below show how smoke typically dissipates within a couple of days after ignition. The top image was taken Wednesday, May 6th , and the bottom image shows conditions shortly after initial ignitions on Tuesday, May 5th.

If you live in or near Chiloquin and may be sensitive to smoke, please keep the following in mind:

•During prescribed burns, smoke often settles into low lying areas overnight
•Close windows at night to reduce indoor smoke impacts
•When driving through smoky areas, slow down and turn on headlights
•Individuals with heart or lung disease, asthma, or other chronic conditions should consult their healthcare provider about smoke protection
•Visit https://centraloregonfire.org/protect-your-health/ to learn more about smoke safety and prescribed burning.

📸🔥 Fire Prevention Message from Our Klamath County 3rd Graders! 🔥📸

Today is a special day as our fire prevention partners came together to select the winners of the Fire Prevention Poster Contest! We visit every 3rd grade classroom in Klamath county to share a Fire Prevention message and today we are recognizing the students who worked hard to share their important prevention messages.

We appreciate the effort, creativity, and participation from all of our Klamath County 3rd graders—34 Classes turned in around 500 amazing posters from county, city, private, and home schools. 💛✨ Great job kids!

🖍️ About the Contest:

Students were asked to create a fire prevention / safety message and draw a picture supporting their idea. Posters are judged on creativity and how well they represent the fire prevention theme.

Examples of safety topics include:

• The importance of working smoke alarms
• Preventing structure and forest fires
• Making sure campfires are “dead out” before leaving
• Using 9 1 1 for emergencies only
• Having a family meeting place if you have a home emergency
• Dangers of playing with matches, lighters, or fireworks
… and so much more!

🏆 Where the Artwork Goes:

If you travel through Klamath Falls you may have noticed the Fire Prevention Billboards around town. Three reside in Klamath Falls with the top 3 posters winners art works being displayed for full year within our community. Be on the lookout for the current 2025 billboards, they will be changing soon to newly selected 2026 winners!

The Klamath Fire Prevention Cooperative and partners may use the winning artwork and names for fire prevention messaging, publications, social media, calendars, newspapers, prevention signs, and local displays. Some artwork may even be shared nationally for fire education! We will distribute the Fire Prevention calendars with the top 13 posters artwork to local businesses and events through out Klamath county.

The SELECTED WINNERS will be shared in the 3rd Grade classrooms at the end of May with all the prizes the students earned!

Thank you to our amazing 3rd graders, teachers, cooperative partners, and judges for helping keep our community fire safe!

And a BIG Thank you to Keep Oregon Green for their generous sponsorship and continued support.

🔥 Prescribed Fire Update – Monitoring Continues Today 🔥

Firefighters will continue monitoring prescribed fires throughout today. All photos and videos shared are from yesterday’s ignition operations. 5/5/2026

🌲 What You Should See:

• Green trees and canopies still intact
• Low flame lengths with creeping, smoldering fire
• Vegetation being reduced on the forest floor
• Fire activity close to roads for easier monitoring
• Smoke will be visible, but expected to dissipate in the next couple of days

🌿 Why Prescribed Fire Matters:

• Reduces low growing shrubs and grasses that fuel wildfires
• Lowers the intensity of future wildfires, making them easier and safer to control
• Promotes healthier forests by clearing overgrown vegetation
• Improves wildlife habitat by encouraging new, diverse plant growth
• Protects nearby communities by reducing the chance of high severity wildfires
• Supports cultural and ecological practices that have maintained these landscapes for generation

🔥Using controlled fire, at the right time, helps prevent dangerous fires later.

Thank you for staying aware and supportive as this important work continues. 🔥💛🌲
