We have a not so sweet update this week on our Florida resident Kitty, Oshun.

Unfortunately we had to make the hard decision to have one of her eyes removed.

She has been having ongoing veterinary care related to her eye. On Monday our vet determined that the pressure in her eye had spiked and it had developed an ulcer.

She was already completely blind in that eye and the current meds were no longer controlling the pressure like we needed it to. The ulcer was the final reason to just relieve her and have it surgically removed.

This procedure was not cheap, and she will continue to need supportive care moving forward. Please everyone send your well wishes and healing energy her way.

If you are able to help contribute towards her veterinary expenses we would be very thankful. If you cannot donate, please remember to interact with this post!

Pan is laying among the wishing flowers today looking magical and serene...
But with the wishing flowers comes hot summer heat!

Today’s post is in regards to foxes, but can be applied to any animal companion that lives or visits outdoors…

It is important those with concrete bases for their enclosure take into account the temperature. Concrete can reach 135°F in direct sunlight and like with dogs, this can easily burn delicate fox paws.

Even at temperatures as low as 70°F, canids such as foxes are at risk of heat stroke. Heat stroke is essentially a high temperature not caused by a fever, which can cause organs to begin shutting down in as little as 3 minutes.

To ensure safety in hot weather, make sure enclosures are adequately shaded, so that it provides an area that is not exposed to direct sunlight throughout the entire day.

Cooling tips:

* provide paddling pools or sprinklers
* raise houses off the ground to allow the air to circulate
* leave bottles of frozen water inside houses
* paint the roof covering white to reflect the heat
* clip dog cage fans (out of reach) in the shaded areas
* ensure houses have vents for air circulation
* provide plenty of fresh cool drinking water
* limit exercise and enrichment until the cooler parts of the day
* bring them inside until the weather is cooler
* do not leave unattended without access to shade and water
*insulate the enclosure on 2 sides with wood to allow airflow but deflect sunlight

Foxes with thick dark coats, old and young foxes, and foxes suffering from health issues are more prone to suffering from heat related issues.

Signs of in foxes:

The most telling symptom of heat stroke in foxes is excessive panting. Other symptoms may include signs of discomfort such as drooling, reddened gums, vomiting, diarrhea, mental dullness or loss of consciousness, uncoordinated movement, and collapse.

Heat stroke can indicate a serious medical problem and cause unseen problems, such as swelling of the brain, kidney failure, intestinal bleeding and abnormal clotting of blood. For this reason, immediate veterinary care is highly recommended.

What do I do if I suspect my fox has heat stroke?

Call your veterinarian immediately and tell them you are on your way. On the way to the veterinarian, travel with the windows open and the air conditioner on.

Until you can get to the veterinarian, be sure to:

* Remove the fox from the hot environment immediately
* Let the fox drink as much cool water as they want
* Cool the fox off by placing a soaked towel on their back

DO NOT give animals suspected of suffering heat stroke ice. In extreme heat, an animals temp. needs to be reduced gradually.

How is heat stroke treated?

Treatment will include intravenous fluid therapy to replace fluids and minerals. Your veterinarian will also monitor your fox for secondary complications such as kidney failure, development of neurologic symptoms, abnormal clotting, changes in blood pressure and electrolytes abnormalities.

Cerberus fox is comfy and safe in his loft, looking as handsome as can be!
Cerby wants to take a moment to remind you all about some helpful info regarding helping wild foxes!
We are often asked, "what should I feed a wild fox?'
The simple answer is that you should not feed them.

Whenever we feed wildlife two things happen, the animals stops hunting, and they lose their fear of humans. While befriending a wild fox may seem like a great idea, it usually ends very badly for the animal. There is a common saying among wildlife rehabbers, “a fed fox is a dead fox”.

While it may sound harsh, the reason this is said is because what will eventually happen is the fox will lose its natural fear of people. When wild animals become to accustomed to people, they become a bite risk, and are often captured and euthanized.

Another possibility is the fox will approach someone who is not friendly and they will harm them. Wildlife being afraid of humans keeps them alive.

Feeding foxes also artificially increases the resources available to them. When a fox is hungry they will travel to find more reliable food sources.
If we feed them, nature tells them there is enough food, and they will stay and breed, increasing the fox population, when the habitat already cannot support it. Perpetuating the “need” for human intervention.
If you’re lucky enough to have a fox or a fox family sharing your space with you, the best thing to do is stay back, and watch from a distance. Enjoy their presence without interfering.

Rather than feeding wildlife directly, by leaving out food, PLANT native edible plants. Native is the key word here. We don’t want to cause more harm to the environment by introducing more non-native plants.

Native fruits, nuts, and berries will not only be consumed by the foxes themselves but it will also attract rodents and other small wildlife. Naturally, this will create a little ecosystem and food web in your own yard.

By providing wild areas with abundant natural food sources you are helping to supplement the foxes (and other animals) diets without causing them harm.

Wanting to feed wildlife comes from a good place, and just needs directed to a safe and healthy method.

Feeding wild foxes is something we really discourage. At the end of the day it’s more harmful for the fox than helpful.
