Great weather at the Two Creeks Park Grand Opening yesterday. Lakewood park count is now 115! I also loved how you can't even hear the Wadsworth traffic from inside the park. Be sure to check out this beautiful oasis, in a part of Lakewood where we most needed more park space. :)

More work to do here - but one good step forward in council tonight, setting guardrails in Lakewood to do our best, within scope of our authority, to protect residents from ICE.

That said - the most important levers here are state and federal. Vote for candidates for state and federal office who understand the harm ICE is doing and will rein them in.

Unanimous support for resolution tonight to define the terms of local response to 🧊 in our community.

Thank you for all the community input after February’s proclamation on this matter and support for defining further. Big thanks to Councilors and for their work on this resolution.

Fun morning hiking up Green Mountain with my dad at Lakewood, Colorado’s William Frederick Hayden Park. Good weather and views. I asked dad to guess how many parks Lakewood had. He guessed 22 - far lower than our 114. (115 when Two Creeks opens next month!)

Love our park system!šŸŒ³šŸ—»

Hi folks! On Wednesday June 3 @ 7 pm in council chambers, Lakewood planning commission will hold an important public hearing to review a request for a special use permit for our new 24/7 Volunteers of America (VOA) navigation center. We need folks to show up and speak in support of this critical resource to move our homeless neighbors off our streets, out of our parks, and into stable housing. Can you make it, please? šŸ™‚ Here are deets:

https://lakewoodspeaks.org/items/4936

This is important. This is for the navigation center on 8000 W Colfax, in Ward 2. (Totally different from Emory elementary in Ward 3).

If the use permit is denied, the navigation center could be effectively shut down. The 100 beds with 24/7 trauma-informed design and services - including mental health and addiction treatment - are essential to our fight against homelessness. Without this vital resource, homelessness in Lakewood & Jeffco will get worse. People will die from exposure. This is life or death.

Folks of good faith can disagree about many issues in our city. It frankly pains me that a tiny handful of folks are trying to make neighbors afraid of this new center, when the reality is our staff has worked for a year+ with VOA to ensure this is a well planned, well run operation that will make the immediate neighborhood safer.

Whether you live a block from this center or in a completely different part of Lakewood, you will be better off with this center open, so homeless Lakewoodians are getting the care they need, rather than camping on our sidewalks and in our parks. And the homeless folks who need these services will be much, much, much better off.

Lots of issues are hard choices. This isn’t one of them. Show up June 3 - speak in support of our navigation center!

Really cool to see this impact. We’ve been using Lakewood composting for a few months now and just love it. I feel much less guilty when we have to dispose of some food now. Amazing how much less full our trash can is too.

Lakewood’s new food scraps program is having major impacts!

In April, 505 Lakewood households kept over 20,000 pounds of food scraps out of the landfill!

Join the Food Scrap Drop-Off Program for just $5/month (free kitchen caddy included!).

I’m sorry but this is just not acceptable. The Chair of the Democratic National Committee commissioned an autopsy of how Dems lost the 2024 election. The analysis that came back was, by his own admission below, completely inadequate.

Rather than address the problem, he tried to cover the problem up and released a set of high level ā€œlessonsā€ supposedly based on this analysis. When challenged in a high profile public interview about why he wasn’t releasing the full report, he became incredibly defensive and lied. He gaslit his critics and lashed out at them for weeks. Only when the uproar about the issue refused to die did he finally come clean and admit that he:

a) commissioned a completely inadequate analysis of the election results,

b) subsequently spent weeks lying and covering it up.

There has been reporting for months that the DNC’s finances have been badly mismanaged. Ken Martin has vigorously denied that. After today, who is willing to believe that?

The stakes are too high. The Democratic Party needs to clearly demonstrate this is not who we are. Ken Martin needs to resign immediately. We need a new DNC chair.

We had great turnout at our Ward 3 meeting tonight, for our listening session on the zoning reform and the special election. 75+ people braved the rain to share perspectives with Ken Cruz and me (and Ward 3 planning Commissioner Steven Buckley) on where we go next on zoning.

Yes - some folks expressed real frustration at points, and clearly, not everyone agreed. I’m very grateful for those who came out tonight. Frankly, I also spend at least as much time worrying about who’s not in the room as I do listening to the folks who are.

That said - we managed to have a 2-hour conversation on this topic, hear from many residents with many different points of view, and keep the conversation mostly civil, solutions-oriented, respectful, and forward looking. Grateful and appreciative of this!

If we’re serious about making housing in Lakewood more affordable, I don’t think ā€œdo nothingā€ is an option.

The good news is all these conversations post-special election are giving me a clearer picture of where there might be some consensus for progress, and where there isn’t.

I don’t expect the city to hold hands and sing kumbaya on a topic where there’s a lot of passion and different ideas about what we should do.

I am hopeful in the wake of the special election that we can make space for more constructive dialogue about how we move forward as a city. And I do think the conversation tonight felt generally like progress toward that goal.

I’m grateful to everyone who came out tonight. I did very little talking tonight and mostly listened. I promise to keep listening in the months to come.

Morning Lakewood! Colfax half marathon starting now. I’ve run it a few times. Always amazed how many folks run in this thing!

It’s a nice route . . . But not quite as nice as running though Ward 3’s parks šŸ˜‰šŸŒ³

Usually around mile 10 is when I question whether this was such a good idea. 🤣
