Today we recognize Juneteenth, the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that enslaved people were free.
The history of Juneteenth is both inspiring and sobering. By the time federal troops arrived, the Civil War was effectively over. Many enslaved Texans already knew freedom was coming. The problem was not a lack of information; it was that those who benefited from slavery continued to hold people in bo***ge until freedom was enforced.
Even then, freedom did not arrive fully formed. Newly freed people faced violence, uncertainty, and barriers to building independent lives. The promise of freedom had been declared, but the work of making it real would continue for generations.
That history belongs to all of us. We share the pain of it, the responsibility to learn from it, and the pride in those who never stopped pushing our nation closer to its ideals.
Juneteenth reminds us that building a more just community is ongoing work. It happens when neighbors care for one another. It happens when people choose to get involved. It happens when we make sure everyone has the resources they need not just to get by, but to thrive.
At Emergency Food Network, we believe access to food is part of that work. Our mission is to provide Pierce County with a consistent, diverse, and nutritious food supply so that no person goes hungry. We know that food is more than nourishment. It is dignity. It is belonging. It is one of the ways a community demonstrates that every person matters.
As we take time to reflect today, we hope you'll also consider how you can be part of that work. Volunteer at a food pantry. Organize a food drive. Support organizations that strengthen our local food system. Talk with your friends and family about why food access matters and why asking for help should never carry shame.
The history of Juneteenth reminds us that meaningful change is not created by a single moment. It is built over time by people who show up for one another and who believe their communities are worth investing in.
Thank you for being part of that work. Together, we can continue building a Pierce County where every person has access to the food they need and the dignity they deserve.
