In Memory of Reserve Lieutenant Lee E. Sawyer

EOW: October 14th, 1960

On October 14th, 1960, Reserve Lieutenant Lee Sawyer, assigned to Lakewood Station, sustained serious injuries when his patrol car collided with another vehicle in the intersection of San Jose Avenue and Compton Boulevard (now Somerset Boulevard) in the City of Paramount. Emergency personnel transported Lieutenant Sawyer to St. Helen’s Hospital in Downey where he died upon arrival.

At the time of his death, Reserve Lieutenant Sawyer, 51, resided in the City of Long Beach with his wife, Helen Marie. He was also survived by a daughter and two sons.

Lee Sawyer was born in Bigfork, Montana. He served as a Sheriff’s Reserve Deputy for nine years and was the first deputy to die in the line of duty working at Lakewood Station.

Last week, a member of the Lakewood Special Assignment Team conducted a traffic stop involving an e-moto bike. During the stop, the suspect fled on foot, leaving behind a backpack.

Deputies established a containment perimeter to locate and take the suspect into custody. During the investigation, deputies recovered the backpack and discovered multiple loaded fi***rm and several rounds of am******on.

Great work by our deputies for their coordinated efforts and commitment to keeping our communities safe.

Yesterday, with the assistance of Walnut Station Deputy Barnes, we had the opportunity to host an E-Bike Safety Class for high school students within the Paramount Unified School District.

The class was informative, interactive, and focused on helping our students become safer and more responsible e-bike riders. Students learned about:

California Vehicle Codes & applicable laws, recent Assembly Bills and e-bike regulations along with different classifications and types of e-bikes. 🚲🏍️

E-bikes have become an increasingly popular way for students to get around, and understanding the rules of the road is essential to keeping everyone safe.

Yesterday, Lakewood Station hosted a Patrol Prep Class for deputies currently working various assignments, including courts and custody, who are interested in making the transition to patrol.

Our training officers shared their knowledge, experience, and insight to help prepare these deputies for the challenges and responsibilities of working patrol.

Investing in our deputies today helps strengthen the future of patrol and, ultimately, the service we provide to our communities.

Today, the City of Lakewood hosted its Public Safety & Emergency Preparedness Expo.

From learning how to respond during a national emergency to creating survival bracelets, partnering agencies and organizations came together to educate residents on the importance of being prepared.

Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make this event a success. We also appreciate all of our partnering agencies and organizations for sharing their time, knowledge, and wealth of information with our community.

Preparedness starts with being informed, and together, we can help keep our communities safe and ready for whatever comes our way.

Earlier today, deputies in the City of Paramount responded to a report of a robbery that had just occurred.

Robbery involves taking someone’s property against their will through the use of force or fear and considered a felony crime.

Deputies quickly arrived on scene, located the suspect, and took him into custody.

Our deputies take pride in keeping our communities safe and protecting local businesses and residents alike.

If you witness a crime in progress, contact your local law enforcement agency and be a good witness. Your call could provide deputies with the information needed to quickly locate and apprehend a suspect.

Detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department are seeking assistance in locating
the above missing person.

Missing person, Mayrin Roque, was last seen on September 16, 2026 at 4:40 A.M., driving away from her home located on the 13000 block of Downey Ave, Paramount.

The missing person suffers from mental health conditions. There is concern for Ms. Roque’s well-being. Any information, please contact the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau, Missing Person’s Detail.
