Everyone on our team has lived experience as a family caregiver đŸ©”

We asked them what a good day, together looks like.

Here’s what they said:

From Amy đŸ©· - As my family ages, I am finding my caregiving duties increasing, especially when it comes to managing finances and legal affairs. This kind of stuff can be tedious, frustrating, and time consuming. Often my interactions with my family are all about business, because there is just so much to do. But we still find time to just be a family together. Last fall, my partner and I took my Dad, my Aunt Ruthie, and my Uncle Larry to Ya Ya Orchard for fresh apples and donuts. It helps me remember that caregiving is not merely a grim duty; it’s an expression of love.

From Allegra 💙 - When my Grandpa Sam was experiencing increased symptoms of dementia, connecting with him became harder and harder. But I learned that what couldn’t be expressed in words can often be understood through imagery. I made a habit of bringing a new album of physical printed photos of my everyday life, every time I visited him. A good day for us was going through the album together, experiencing surprise and delight at the everyday. I cherish those photo albums even more now that he’s gone. This photo of Winnie at the crafts store got a laugh.

Journaling helps us process our experiences and recognize the good in everyday life that we often overlook. Beyond the emotional benefits, the physical act of writing is good for your brain and supports learning and memory.

Use these journal prompts to reflect on thoughts and emotions as you work toward more good days.

Name one small action that a friend, loved one, or community member has taken to brighten your day recently. Why was it special to you?

What is one small way that you can create space for yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, or community to take a brain break today?

What would you tell someone who was struggling to reach out during their time of need? Is there any part of this message that you need to hold on to for yourself?

Choose 10 things you can hear, smell, see, or feel in your surroundings. For each one, think of one thing you are grateful for.

Write a letter to your future self, thanking them for getting you to a new day, month, or year. What things do you believe you will overcome between now and then? What do you believe you would need to hear to keep going?

Thanks to for putting together these prompts!

“Good” doesn’t have to mean happy or productive.

For caregivers, it can mean calm, neutral, comfortable, manageable, or something else. It can change over time. It’s different for everyone, and only you can define what a good day looks like to you.

So, what does a good day look like?

For you, because your mental health matters, too?

For your loved one?

And for you and your loved one together?

Tell us in the comments!

One of the hardest parts of being a caregiver that we don’t talk about enough about is how it changes your relationship with your loved one. In many cases, a different type of relationship preceded the caregiving relationship.

Maybe you’re caring for your parent, your sibling, or your spouse. It’s normal to grieve the relationship you had with them before you became their caregiver.

If you’re a parent, maybe you’re grieving a life you envisioned with your child that’s turned out differently now.

Here, now, in this chapter, you can have good days with them, too.

For Mental Health Awareness Month, we’ll be sharing questions, musings, exercises, and stories to help you explore how to have more good days together, for the wellbeing of you, your loved one, and your entire family.
