Congratulations to West Metro Engineer Tim Felton on his retirement after 21 years with West Metro and 15 years with Boulder Rural Fire.
Over nearly four decades in the fire service, Tim built a career defined by professionalism, leadership, and a commitment to serving both his fellow firefighters and the communities they protect.
Throughout his career, Tim served in numerous specialized roles, including:
• More than 20 years on the Wildland Team
• REMS Team member (rapid extraction team: primary mission is to provide emergency medical treatment and fast, safe extraction for injured firefighters)
• Sawyer
• Engine Boss (wildland fire position)
• Task Force Leader (wildland fire position)
• Dive Team member
Whether responding to wildfires, leading crews in the field, or sharing his knowledge with the next generation of firefighters, Tim brought experience and a steady presence to every assignment.
Please join us in congratulating Tim on his retirement and thanking him for his years of service to West Metro Fire Rescue, Boulder Rural Fire, and the communities he helped protect.

🔥 This is how many homes burn in a wildfire.
Not from the main wall of flames.
From embers.

⚠️COMMUNITY INFO ALERT: Regional Lookout Alert Test⚠️
On Wednesday, June 3, beginning in the morning, Clear Creek County, Jefferson County, the City and County of Broomfield, and the City of Westminster will conduct a regional test of the Lookout Alert system.
The test will include Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA). Residents may also receive test notifications by text, email, and voice message.
This is ONLY a test. No action is needed.
If you are not already signed up for Lookout Alert- or if you haven’t updated your information in the last six months- now is a good time to do it. Having updated emergency alerts can make a critical difference during an actual emergency.

West Metro is looking for civic-minded residents to serve on the Civil Service Committee - a citizen-led committee appointed by the Board of Directors that helps oversee the hiring, testing, and promotional processes for West Metro firefighters.
This unique volunteer opportunity gives community members a direct role in helping maintain the professionalism, integrity, and excellence of one of Colorado’s premier fire districts.
We're looking for individuals who are engaged, thoughtful, and committed to public service.

• Be a registered voter residing within the West Metro Fire Protection District
• Be available to attend one meeting per month
• Be available to participate in daytime promotional processes throughout the year

🔥 If the power goes out during a wildfire evacuation, can you still get your car out of the garage?
Now’s the time to find out. Not when smoke is in the air and it’s time to leave.
Most garage doors have a manual emergency release cord that allows you to open the door by hand if the power is out.
A few things to know:
➡️ Know where the release cord is before you need it
➡️ Make sure the garage door is fully closed before pulling it
➡️ Garage doors are heavy- use caution when lifting
➡️ Practice reconnecting the opener once power is restored
Wildfires can damage power lines or cause outages before evacuation orders are even issued.
Knowing how to open your garage door manually is one of those small things that can make a big difference when seconds matter.

Our crews have seen a lot over the years.
And when it comes to vehicle crashes, sometimes the damage and positioning don’t even seem scientifically possible.
That’s why firefighters from West Metro Stations 10 and 14- members of the Technical Rescue Team- regularly train on advanced auto extrication scenarios using specialized rescue tools and techniques.
This training focused on:
➡️ Vehicle stabilization
➡️ Up-top extrication from a vehicle on its side
➡️ Door removal using multiple tool techniques
No two crashes are the same. And some scenes are incredibly complex.
Training like this helps crews work quickly, safely, and efficiently to reach trapped patients when seconds matter most. 🚒

🔥 Most homes lost in wildfires don’t ignite from a giant wall of flames.
They ignite from embers.
Tiny, wind-driven embers can blow miles ahead of a fire, slipping into vents, crawl spaces, and under decks- where they can smolder and ignite your home from the inside out.
One simple step:
➡️ Install 1/8" or smaller metal mesh screening over vents, crawl spaces, and deck openings to help keep embers out.
And don’t forget:
Defensible space matters. Clearing debris, leaves, pine needles, and other fuel around your home can make a major difference when embers start flying.
Because wildfire doesn’t need direct flames to destroy a home. Just the right ember in the wrong spot. 🔥
