🔥 Wildland Fire Response 🔥

Last night at approximately 8:15 PM, units were dispatched to a lightning-caused fire on the south end of the county.

Crews from Stations 1 and 2 responded to the incident, while a unit from the North Station backfilled Station 1 to maintain coverage. Responding crews were able to quickly contain and extinguish the fire and remained on scene to locate and extinguish remaining hot spots.

Conditions are extremely dry right now, and fires can spread rapidly in the heat and dry vegetation.

If you see smoke, please don’t assume someone else has reported it—call it in. Early notification can make a significant difference in keeping a small fire from becoming a much larger incident.

Thank you to all responding crews for their quick work and continued dedication to keeping our county safe. 🚒🔥

Please Use Extra Caution. Due to the Main Street closure, emergency vehicles will be using side streets to access Highway 50 and Highway 25. These routes have reduced visibility compared to our normal response routes. Please slow down, stay alert at intersections, and be prepared to yield to emergency vehicles. A few extra seconds of attention can make a big difference in helping us respond safely and efficiently to those in need. Thank you for your cooperation.

In just over 2 weeks, construction will begin on Main Street. While this will be a short term inconvenience, we’re excited to see improvements to local infrastructure.

This post shows the official KDOT detour, we encourage everyone along this route to be aware and cautious with the increased traffic as well as asking all other local traffic to slow down around construction zones as your daily routes change.

Kearny Co. Fire & Rescue will be shuffling trucks around in our station before the project starts so there will be no interruption in service.

Thanks for your patience during this project. Stay safe!

K-25 to close in Lakin beginning June 15

The Kansas Department of Transportation will begin a resurfacing project on June 15 on K-25 between Santa Fe Avenue and Washington Avenue in Lakin.

K-25 will be closed between Santa Fe and Washington avenues during construction. Motorists will be directed to follow the signed detour via Bopp Boulevard, W. Railroad Avenue and S. Bridge St.

The closure is necessary because the railroad crossing within the work zone is not wide enough to accommodate traffic while construction is underway. As a result, traffic cannot be shifted through the work zone, requiring a full closure.

Vogts-Parga Construction LLC, of Moundridge, is the contractor for the $1.7 million project. Work is expected to be complete by the end of August, weather permitting.

For more information, contact Heather Jennings, construction manager, at 620-255-2880, or Yazmin Moreno, public information officer, at 620-765-7080.

The map shows the approximate location of the closure in red and the detour in blue.
