Lamar Community Pool Petition

Lamar Community Pool Petition A page to spread the message that we as a Community DO want a public pool back in our town.

05/21/2024

After much hemming and hawing and attempts to kick the can further down the road we have finally seen a small step on the right direction to save our pool. The video is an 8 minute portion of the discussion that finally took place after the motion was initially made and died on the floor. Finally the motion to take action to listen to the community was made, seconded and passed.
A RFQ (request for qualifications) will be sent out to hopefully start the steps of restoration of the parts of the current facilities we can save. I want to apologize but the video has some pretty terrible sound quality as I was not fully prepared to record it and only began the recording in order to have transparency and accountability when it appeared that the council and mayor were going to try to ignore the community desire to see a pool.
Further, after this video ended and a few topics later Mayor Oeltjen unsuccessfully attempted to have the current pool committee (which is currently inactive) dissolved on the grounds that there is not a pool. The council disagreed with the mayor's request and it was decided that new members will be appointed.
Thank you to everyone who showed up tonight to show support. Thank you to everyone who has put in the effort and time to come up with a plan to present at this meeting. And thank you to the Members of council who are listening to us finally.

It's Game Day Fans and your Lamar Mo Community Exploretory Committee/ Pool Committee team is ready to win!!
We have worked extremely hard this past month to gather information, people's ideas, and working with pool contractors on how to remedy this problem. Now... Today is the day to present a starting plan to the city that will let them know, WE DO CARE, what happens to our pool.
We have handed out over 1000 flyers and talked to over 600 local people this weekend to find out their reaction to the demolition of the pool and out of these people we only found fewer than 10 people who said... doz it.
We received an overwhelming response to keeping and reusing our pools. We were amazed at how excited they were that we were fighting to keep it.

We need to pack the house tonight at 6pm at Thiebaud Auditorium meeting rooms to show your support to Saving Our Pool. Don't forget to text SAVE OUR POOL to all the aldermans phone numbers.

We have 5 speakers on the agenda today who have worked hard on their presentations, so lets back them up in numbers!!!

Pass this on to anyone who might be interested.
And if you haven't already signed our petition.

MEETING MONDAY! Be there to show your support of a community pool in our town.

04/22/2024

Notes from the meeting Debbie Little organized:

The April 22nd Community Pool planning committee meeting was held at Daylight Donut at 10am. There were 9 present and 5 more come after their YMC class.
It was a great meeting.
We spent an hour going over what had already been accomplished concerning the YMCA and the pool inspection done on Monday.

Susan Roland brought a spec plan of a pool using our current layout, which uses some of our existing pool and amenities. This will save a significant amount of money.

Susan also had a blueprint of the building that has been donated. It will house our new Lamar YMCA. They will hire local staff while being held under the Carthage YMCA umbrella. The Carthage YMCA has already started applying for grants for the equipment at our YMCA.

The next planning meeting will be Monday, April 29th, at the Daylight Donut shop on the square. At this meeting, we will be discussing a community evening meeting to develop a plan to present to the City Council.
We were fortunate to have KOAM there to take notes and do interviews for tonights news at 5pm and 6pm.

Respectfully,
Debbie Little

City Council does not believe that the people in our community want a public pool. They don't see the desire or how it would benefit our community. It's time we start telling our aldermen. Here is a map of the different wards and the contact information for each ward as well. Please reach out to your aldermen before the meeting on April 15th!!!

If you aren't sure who your alderman is or you live in the county you can always reach out to the mayor directly!
