We want to keep our community informed regarding a recent water quality concern involving the Arkansas River. Colorado Parks and Wildlife is monitoring conditions downstream following an untreated sewage spill that occurred in Pueblo last week.

North Gateway Park remains open. At this time, we are simply sharing the information currently available so residents and visitors are aware of the situation.

The City Staff did an amazing job with our float and we are thrilled to have representation from Lamar with Dog Biz LLC, Main Street Lamar, Prowers Medical Center, Lamar School District Re2 and we cannot forget Lamar Chamber's Fan Favorite... HONKERS!!!

FINAL DATA CENTER UPDATE: I had brought this opportunity forward because I believe Lamar deserves every chance to grow, create good jobs, and build a stronger future. My goal has been to simply to learn the facts, hear your concerns, and determine whether this opportunity was the right fit for Lamar.

Our community has spoken, the Council and I have listened, and the Council and I have decided not to continue the discussions and place a moratorium on Data Centers within the City of Lamar. I appreciate everyone who took the time to be involved in this discussion.

This opportunity may have ended, but my commitment to Lamar has not. I will keep working with the City Council to bring responsible growth, investment, and good jobs to our community.

UPDATE: Over the past few days, I have followed the community discussion regarding potential data center developments… I want you to know that your feedback and concerns have been heard.

Many of you have asked whether an agreement is already signed, if a decision was made, and if residents will have a voice… To be completely clear: "No contract has been signed, no project has been approved, and there is no formal proposal before the City Council for a decision."

However, I can say that there has been outside interest in exploring data center developments in Lamar. Which is why I am attempting to take a proactive approach. By gathering community input first, we can ensure that our community sets the standards before any possible discussions begin.

From zero-water cooling systems and the potential for lower electricity rates through economies of scale… to using new tax revenue for schools, healthcare, infrastructure and to buy more water for our future… our initial research has shown that Data Centers have changed.

Data Centers can be good for “Some Communities” but it truly depends on the priorities of the community.

Your feedback about water, power rates, agriculture, environment, jobs, housing, and transparency, helps to set the priorities and standards we will require before considering any proposal or project.

UPCOMING MEETINGS & PUBLIC INPUT:

• Monday Joint Work Session (City Council & County Commissioners): This is a work session between the two governing bodies and staff to discuss data centers and setting development standards based on city and county priorities. Because it is an operational work session, there will be no public comment period available.
• Monday Regular City Council Meeting (7:00 PM): The standard public comment period will be open. Speakers are limited to three minutes each and does not allow for open back-and-forth discussion.
• Town Hall Meeting Commitment: Because regular meetings limit open dialogue, I am committed to ensuring our community has a real voice. Monday night, I will formally ask City Council to host a dedicated Public Town Hall Meeting before any formal proposal is ever considered, giving everyone the chance to ask questions and provide input before final decisions are made. The final times and dates will be published on the City of Lamar page and in the local media.

Being prepared does not mean a deal is in motion; it means making sure we have the facts, standards, and public input needed to make the right decision for Lamar – IF – a formal proposal is ever presented.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT UPDATE: As Mayor, I've always looked for ways to strengthen our local economy and help Lamar grow. But I've also always believed that growth has to make sense for our community.

Over the years, Lamar has seen major opportunities come and go. Sometimes we chose not to pursue them. Other times, we simply weren't prepared when they came along.

I do not want Lamar to miss out on good jobs, private investment, or other opportunities because we don't have a plan in place. At the same time, I will not support growth that puts our water, electric system, ratepayers, taxpayers, or quality of life at risk.

That is why I will be working with City Council and Staff to develop a resolution to create and implement a “Community Benefit & Responsible Data Center Development Standards” policy for the City of Lamar.

Simply put, these standards would help us decide what we expect from any major development before an opportunity arrives, instead of trying to figure it out afterward.

These Standards will help us and future City Councils to:
• Protect our community resources
• Hold developers responsible for the impacts of their projects
• Consider the long-term effects on our community
• Make sure any opportunity provides real benefits for Lamar

Being prepared doesn't mean saying yes to a project... It means knowing what our expectations are before decisions must be made.

Over the next few weeks, you'll be hearing more about this as our research and discussions continue. As part of that effort, City Council and staff will hold a special work session with the Prowers County Commissioners next Monday evening to discuss potential opportunities and shared standards that could benefit both the City and County while respecting each entity's role.

The City Council and I have always supported responsible growth, and we always will. But growth should work for our community, not the other way around.

As always, I want to encourage community feedback and input… but remember, this isn't about saying yes or no to any specific project - it's about making sure Lamar is prepared if opportunities come our way.

🚨🚨UPDATE ON THE INCREASED LAW ENFORCEMENT PRESENCE IN PROWERS COUNTY🚨🚨

The collaborative efforts of numerous law enforcement agencies contributed to the successful apprehension of an individual sought in connection with a Northglenn Police Department homicide investigation. The suspect was taken into custody during the morning hours of August 16th in Prowers County, after a deadly Friday night stabbing in Northglenn, Colorado. Because this remains an active investigation, the Lamar Police Department will defer to the Northglenn Police Department for information regarding the homicide investigation and the individual taken into custody.

The agencies involved with this operation include: Northglenn Police Department, Lincoln County Sheriff's Office-Colorado, Kiowa County Sheriff's Office, Cheyenne County Sheriff's Office - Colorado, Prowers County Sheriff’s Office, Colorado State Patrol and their SOAR team, Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Colorado Parks and Wildlife - Lamar, La Junta Police Department, Springfield, CO Police Department, and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, with additional support from the Bent County Sheriff’s Office, Colorado Department of Corrections and the US Marshal’s Office. The cooperation and assistance with various outside agencies were invaluable in bringing this situation to a successful conclusion without any additional harm to anyone in the community or to responding officers.

The Lamar Police Department also reminds the public of the importance of relying on information from verified sources during active law enforcement operations. Unverified information, speculation, and inaccurate social media posts can create unnecessary confusion, complicate investigative efforts, and divert resources during a rapidly evolving incident. We appreciate the community’s patience and cooperation as law enforcement works to provide accurate information when it’s appropriate to do so.

In conclusion, the Lamar Police Department values all surrounding agencies’ cooperation and dedication to our shared common goal of working together to make the community as safe as possible.

COMMUNITY UPDATE: I am pleased to share that the suspect involved in the ongoing search in the Lamar area has been taken into custody.

Thank you to the many law enforcement agencies and officers who worked together throughout this operation, including the men and women of the Lamar Colorado Police Department who assisted while continuing to protect our community.

Most importantly, thank you to our residents and businesses for your patience, cooperation, and understanding throughout this situation.

The City of Lamar will share additional information as it is officially released and becomes available.

COMMUNITY UPDATE: I know there is a great deal of concern in our community regarding the ongoing search for a suspect who remains at large in the Lamar area.

I want to reassure our residents that the Lamar Colorado Police Department is actively assisting the agencies involved in this operation while continuing to monitor and protect our community.

While our local Police Department is assisting, we are not the agency directing the operation or making decisions regarding the search.

The City of Lamar has shared information as it has been made available to us and will continue to provide updates as the situation progresses.

Please remain aware of your surroundings, secure your homes and vehicles, and do not approach anyone you believe may be the suspect. If you see anything suspicious, call 911.

Businesses may also review their safety procedures and choose to implement an informal lockdown or other precautions. However, that decision is at the discretion of each individual business and is not currently a City-directed requirement.

I know situations like this create concern and uncertainty. Please know that many law enforcement professionals are working together, and I am grateful for their efforts and for the men and women of the Lamar Police Department, the Prowers County Sheriff’s Department, and all of the first responders who continue to watch over our community.
