In 1995, Dolly Parton started mailing books to children in her home county to inspire children to love reading in honor of her dad, who couldn’t read or write.

That idea lives here too. Every month, 214 children in Decatur County find a book in the mailbox — because of neighbors who fund it, volunteers who run it, and a woman from Sevier County, TN who started it all.

Thank you, Dolly. We will always love you.

Access to local history should be available to everyone.

That’s why our Community History Archive, hosted by Advantage Archives, will be
updated in the coming weeks to align with new accessibility standards under ADA Title II. These improvements will enhance accessibility and usability for all users.

These updates will help more people discover and connect with the stories that shaped our community. Stay tuned.
