Beware of Brushing Scam!

A recent scam has been showing up in many states. We have not had any local reports, but want to make residents aware before you are victimized.

A "brushing" scam is when someone receives an unexpected gift or item not ordered in the mail from a place like Amazon or other company. Examples of gifts include, rings, bracelets, necklaces, Bluetooth speaker, etc. The gift will have the recipient’s address, but not include the sender's information or be from a known retailer. When the recipient opens the package to see what it is and possibly who sent it, there is a QR code to scan to find out who sent the gift.

Once the code is scanned, all the information from that phone will be sent to scammers. They receive all access to the phone. All personal and financial information is accessible to the scammers and often the victim's bank accounts are drained.

The gift can be kept or thrown away, but the QR code should NOT be scanned for any reason. QR code scams are nothing new. These scams show up in all places, including parking meters.

Inform your family members about the scam and avoid scanning any unknown QR codes included in the package.

The Lampasas County Sheriff's Office County Jail Staff is commended for passing the 8th annual Texas Commission Jail Standard Jail Inspection, showcasing exceptional documentation, operations, and inmate care. The inspection encompassed all aspects of jail management, including hourly and su***de checks, mental health evaluations, fire rescue demonstrations, and inmate interviews. The staff received high praise for the facility's cleanliness, inmate care, and food service. The outstanding leadership of Jail Administrator Mrs. Cristopher Brister and Assistant Jail Administrator Brian Pomeroy was recognized by the Jail Commission, acknowledging their dedication and excellence. The tireless efforts of the Detention Officers, despite being shorthanded and underpaid, are truly commendable. I extend my sincerest gratitude to all involved. The citizens of Lampasas County should take pride in this achievement.

Lots of excitement these next few weeks with our children returning back to school. Be on the look out for children loading & unloading from the school bus or their parent's vehicle. They will literally run across the road thinking you see them or they think they have enough time crossing the road. Please be mindful & observant. Thanks in advance to our bus drivers, school teachers & staff for taking on those responsibilities and duties.

⚠️ ARREST WARRANT SCAM

We have receivedl calls from citizens stating they received a call from a Lampasas County Sheriff's Investigator.
The Investigator advises them that they have an outstanding warrant with Lampasas County Sheriff’s Office for missing court and due to unpaid citations. The Investigator tells them that they need to arrive at LCSO to pay the fine and spend time in jail, or they could have their supervisor expedite the process with a payment over the phone. This is a PHONE SCAM!!!

THINGS TO REMEMBER:
👉 Law Enforcement (LCSO) will never contact you, via phone or email, regarding payment of warrants.

👉 Law Enforcement (LCSO) will never request payment, over the phone, to pay off a warrant.

👉 Law Enforcement (LCSO)will never accept payment via gift cards or Bitcoin.

Remember to trust your instincts. If it sounds far-fetched, then it probably is. If you feel it is a scam, take the information given, end the call, and contact the Law Enforcement entity (with an approved listed number) that has supposedly issued the warrant. They should verify the existence of any warrant.
