Founded in 1971, Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13 (IU 13) has worked diligently with the 22 school districts in Lancaster and Lebanon counties, as well as with students in nonpublic schools, preschools and adult education programs, to improve the lives of students of all ages. Since that time,

the Adult Education Program has served 70,000 in classes including English as a Second Language (ESL), GED, ABE (Adult Basic Education), Family Literacy, Citizenship, Vocational ESL, Health Careers and Basic Skills, Preparation for Ready2Work, and Math Instruction. It is the goal of the Adult Education Program to provide adults with a quality learning experience so that they will be successful in their roles as workers, family members, and citizens.

IU13 Community Education instructor, Gedion Carido, supported his 48 daytime and evening English language learning students in writing letters to their state elected officials. The students, who wrote about the benefits of adult education classes, learned about their state senator and representative and practiced their English through this writing exercise. The letters went out in the mail last week. Talk about civic engagement!

Family Literacy instructor, Heidi Torrens, provided a lesson for ESL parents and their children on butterflies, observing the process from caterpillar to the chrysalis to the butterfly . On Thursday, Heidi's students and other staff members joined her in releasing the butterflies into the courtyard at the Burle building. The Family Literacy program lives out the belief that parents are the first and most important teacher for their children.

Lebanon ESL students learned about the Lebanon Transit System on Thursday, 4/16/26. A Lebanon Transit employee came to the classroom to teach students about bus routes, bus fares, and reading bus schedules. Then, students boarded a bus to experience traveling around Lebanon. Another successful presentation provided by Novelty Manufacturing Co. was held on April 7 as part of the Manufacturing Grant. This session took place in Lancaster during evening classes and was delivered in a hyflex format, allowing participants to join either in person or remotely. Attendees included IU13 students, CareerLink and Tec Centro students as well as clients. The presentation fostered deep engagement and generated enthusiastic responses from participants.

Students in Advanced Academic English class celebrated the end of the Spring 1 Session with food from Vietnam, Cuba, Haiti, Ethiopia, Canada, and Ukraine. Their instructor, classroom aide, and student advisor joined the festivities, too!
