Happy National Mascot Day to Sir Streaks A Lot!

It’s been 80 years since a Lancaster Newspapers sports reporter wrote that the boys basketball players were “blue streaks” running up and down the court, yet the lion, an emblem of Manheim Township’s earliest days, lives on. In his address to graduates earlier this month, MTHS Principal Dave Rilatt recalled this history and noted the merging of these identities, "The lion honors our historic strength and pride, while the blue streak represents our energy and momentum.”

According to school newspaper records, our mascot appears to have been given the official name “Sir Streaks A Lot” by popular vote during the 2000-01 school year. Special thanks to the Class of 2019 whose gift to MTHS was two lion costumes, thus bringing Sir Streaks A Lot back to Neffsville after an 11-year hiatus!

"Threaded into the four decades of pool deck residency was a fountain of accolades and honors. Under Graybill, Township collected 15 L-L girls team titles and 11 on the boys side. Dig deeper, and a combined 31 section crowns own space in the Blue Streaks’ gymnasium rafters."

The lineup was never finalized. It was considered a chess game to most in Hempfield and Manheim Township swimming circles.

This morning Manheim Township Alumni Association presented Morgan Fogarty ’99, Dr. John Musser ’95, and Nelson Rohrer ’69 with Manheim Township’s Distinguished Alumni Award. Following a breakfast reception, our honorees spoke to the Manheim Township School District senior class during commencement rehearsal.

Our Distinguished Alumni traveled different paths to their success, yet the advice they passed on today shared a common theme. It wasn't tied to professional achievement or personal growth. Rather, it was that people —and how you treat them and care for them—are what matter most.

We thank Morgan, John and Nelson for their meaningful remarks, and we offer congratulations to the Class of 2026, our newest Blue Streak alumni!

On Friday evening, Manheim Township seniors gathered at Kruis Field to receive their yearbooks, enjoy games and treats, courtesy of the Class of 2026 and the MT Alumni Association, and mark a final sunset together before they cross the stage and turn their tassels this Thursday.

Senior Sunset, and its first-day-of-school bookend, Senior Sunrise, have become simple but special traditions for students to commemorate their final year at MTHS together.

A few members of the Alumni Committee joined faculty and administrators to help distribute yearbooks and snacks, and we brought along yearbooks from eras past! Students perused the school activities and student life (and fashions and hairstyles) from 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70 years ago. Some even found parents and relatives!

MTHS welcomed back two Blue Streak alumni yesterday as part of a special presentation to the freshman class.

Cathy Deguire ’94, CEO of Ponessa Behavioral Health, was among the professionals who joined actors from Fulton Theatre’s production of “Dear Evan Hansen,” including Annalise Prentiss ’20, for a panel discussion about mental health.

Bookended by powerful musical performances from the cast, the session provided a forum for students and panelists to share experiences and engage in a conversation about anxiety, isolation and the effects of social media, all central themes of the musical. Prentiss, who plays the role of 16-year-old Zoe Murphy, noted that reflections on her own high school experiences helped to shape her portrayal of her character.

The session was part of MT’s Freshman Academy, an annual opportunity for students to reflect on their growth, build on their personal development, and explore future possibilities. Through engaging activities and inspiring guest speakers, students are encouraged to think about who they are, what they value, and how their high school journey connects to their long-term goals.

At Manheim Township High School’s final student recognition ceremony of the 2025-2026 school year, held on Thursday, April 23, MTEF presented the James L. and Jane Louise Wertz Memorial Award to Isabelle and Avonnie, as nominated and selected by faculty and administration. This award was established in memory of the Wertz siblings, classes of 1982 and 1985 respectively, by their parents to recognize that the transition from middle school to high school can be challenging and that success can be found through hard work.
