Lancaster Public Library Lancaster Public Library inspires, empowers, and strengthens our community.

As one of the oldest public libraries in the country, Lancaster Public Library has been providing library service in Lancaster for over 260 years. Lancaster Public Library has two locations in the county including the main branch at 151 N. Queen Street in the City of Lancaster and the Mountville Branch at 120 College Avenue in Mountville. Our free public library services include:
»Adult, children,

and teen books, periodicals, and audiovisuals from a collection of nearly 200,000 individual items
»Research, business, and historical reference collections
»Research assistance by skilled professional reference librarians
»Educational, recreational, and cultural programs and events for children, teens, adults, and seniors in collaboration community organizations
»Public computers with Internet access, as well as computer instruction for adults
»Online access to databases
»Public meeting rooms for approved community activities
»Quiet research and training areas
»Special language collections

In addition to basic library services, Lancaster Public Library offers special and unique information services to specific groups of individuals in the community like the Business & Reference Center, the World Languages Collection, and the Autism Resource Collection.

Attention: Lancaster Public Library - Mountville Branch Patrons

⚠️ Due to recent changes in the school dismissal routine made by our neighbor Dayspring Christian Academy, the lower parking lot is not accessible to library patrons from 2-3:30PM on school days.

🅿️ Dayspring has made the commitment to keep the upper parking lot open for library patron parking during dismissal periods.

😭 If you choose to park in the lower lot between 2-3:30PM, you may not be able to exit the lot until the dismissal traffic has cleared.

Our catalog change is happening NEXT WEEK!

Please note that for a short period of time (August 31-Sept 2), we will be operating with Limited Services. To check out materials, you MUST have your library card with you. ID will not be enough. During that time, we cannot place holds, create or modify accounts, or check in items. Other online services (things like Libby and Lynx eResources) may experience pockets of downtime as well. Thank you in advance for your patience – we have it on good authority that it will all be worth it!

As reminder, today is the last day to export your reading history and lists from your online library account before they are lost forever. If you don’t do this by the end of the day (8/24), we cannot help you to recover them.

Turn that frown upside down, because we are extending due dates during this era of reduced service to make life easier for everyone! No items (other than potential interlibrary loans) will be due between Tuesday, 8/25/26 and Wednesday, 9/9/26.

The public libraries in Lancaster County are working together to achieve STABLE, SUFFICIENT, and SECURE funding in the form of a dedicated Library tax, but we can’t do it without your help!

A petition is being circulated to put a proposed library funding measure on the November ballot. You can visit either Lancaster Public Library location to learn more, ask questions, and sign the petition ✍️

Or let us come to you! We will dedicate meaningful time to Vote Yes 4 Libraries when we present at these upcoming municipality meetings:

• Thursday, August 20, 6:30pm - Upper Leacock Township
• Thursday, August 27, 6pm - East Petersburg Borough
• Monday, September 1, 7pm - Conestoga Township
• Wednesday, September 2, 7pm - East Hempfield Township

✍️ Signing the petition does not mean voting yes on the measure—it just gives voters the opportunity to decide on November 3.

We had a beautiful night to visit with SoWe neighbors at the National Night Out event!

There’s (almost!) nothing better than connecting with our patrons on their terms and in their neighborhoods. We made library cards, checked out books, and talked with residents about the need for stable, sufficient, and secure funding for our libraries.

It was a great event for a great cause with a GREAT bunch of Library Lovers.
