🐶🚒Yesterday morning, our Truck 6 and crew participated in the Pet Palooza event where our own Firefighter Vertlieb was a celebrity judge. Not only does Allan have several years of experience as a firefighter, but he’s also raised 22 litters of puppies (many of which are show dogs) and has been a groomer for the past 22 years which gives him some great knowledge for this event!

Thanks again to Stroll Summerfield Farms for the invite and to the residents who came out yesterday!

This week in history .... our Memorial Bell.

To help honor the memory of all deceased Town Line firefighters, former firefighter Bob Rozek and community member Neil Smith restored the original bell used on our second truck, the 1930 Stewart. A special stand was also built for the bell and a plaque inscribed to read “In Memorial of All Deceased Town Line Firefighters.”

The bell was in service from August 1930 to September 1986 and was unveiled during the annual Memorial Day service held on Monday, May 25, 1987. The bell is displayed in our history case at Station 1 and is still used as part of the annual Memorial Day service when it is rung for each firefighter, benevolent, or auxiliary member who has passed away in the previous year.

Check back next week when we share another piece of history from our 105 years.

This morning, we gathered for our 70th Community Memorial Day service to honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice defending our freedoms and the freedoms of others. As is tradition, we also honored those who passed away in the last year; 70 year Ladies Auxiliary member Ann Mosman, 63 year Ladies Auxiliary Member Elizabeth Tryzbinski, and Benevolent Association member Joseph Zakrewski.

Thank you to everyone who attended including Pastor Mark Sterlace from the Grace in Community Church, Elder Trey Kipfer from the Alden Christian Fellowship, the Alden High School Marching Band, the Ladies Auxiliary for providing refreshments, the Erie County Sheriffs and New York State Police for providing traffic control, and our own members for their help in preparing the station this weekend for the event. Lastly, thank you to EMS Captain Chris Kidder and President Jennifer Broska for organizing today’s service and filling the shoes of those that came before them.

To the fallen service members who have given their lives for our country over the past 250+ years, we will never forget you and all that you gave. We forever owe you a debt of gratitude.

Today we honor the men and women who selflessly served our country to defend our freedoms and the freedoms of others. We honor those who lost their lives in combat, and we honor those who could no longer fight the mental demons that haunted them after their return.

This weekend may be the official start of summer and we often celebrate the day with cookouts and picnics or by getting the yard ready for the season. Enjoy your day, but please take a moment to remember those who no longer walk this earth but watch over their families from heaven. We encourage you to pause for a minute at 3pm this afternoon for a National Moment of Remembrance to remember and honor those who have died in service to our nation.

Although Memorial Day is only one day away year, we will never forget the fallen. May peace surround their love ones and may they find comfort in their memories.

Last night at 6:25pm, we were dispatched to a report of a motor vehicle accident involving a motorcyclist on Broadway west of Two Rod Road. Chief Broska was first on location and assisted bystanders and sheriffs with patient treatment until the ambulance arrived.

After, our crews handled traffic control closing Broadway down to two lanes while officials conducted the accident investigation. We were back in service at 11:04pm.

In the middle of all that, we were blessed with a beautiful sunset. ☀️

Thank you to the bystanders who ran to help the motorcyclist and the drivers passing through for their patience and care in navigating past the scene. A reminder, always be alert when going through an accident scene and SLOW DOWN so our firefighters aren’t injured by carelessness.

This month in history .... our annual Memorial Day Service.

The annual fire department Memorial Day service dates back to 1956. Started by Francis Schwartz on his front porch just a few doors east of the fire station, Mr. Schwartz had a short ceremony with a wreath and a couple of boy scouts along with Reverend Hudson P. Phillips. Only a few people attended the service as it was not well publicized.

The following year, Mr. Schwartz contacted the fire department to be part of the ceremony along with the local scout troops. He also contacted Alden Central School to see if their band would provide the music, because he wished to parade to the Town Line school next to the Firemen’s picnic grounds on Town Line Road. He received a good response, and the public was invited to attend the service at the school. The tradition continued for some time until it was decided to have the service at the fire hall and parade to the Town Line Lutheran Church.

Mr. Schwartz did get some help from fire department to prepare the service, which proved to be a blessing in disguise due to his untimely death in 1978. The fire department had the basic idea and design of the preparation process, and it was decided to combine honoring the servicemen with the honoring of the fire department organization members who answered their final call in the past year. John Wild was the first fire department chairman of the service and was followed by Robert Stoldt, Joseph Trzybinski, and most recently Robert L. Mueller who had the honor for over two decades until his passing in 2024.

Our service has been held in sunshine and clouds, heat and cold, wind and rain. Even a global pandemic couldn't prevent the department from honoring the fallen. In 2020 and 2021, the service was pre-recorded using most of the key components of the traditional service and a video was created and shared on social media and on the department social media and website.

We continue with this important and traditional event, with Monday's service marking our 70th. We invite you to join us to honor the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
