Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority

Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority LCSWMA manages the municipal solid waste and recyclable materials from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania But what if the opposite were true?

By definition, waste means something "discarded as no longer useful." What if we RETHINK waste and consider the value it holds? What if we RECOVER opportunities from waste to RENEW our world? What if waste were a resource? LCSWMA answers this question every day in innovative, creative and sustainable ways. Visit www.wasteisaresource.org to watch the story unfold.

Did you know that waste-to-energy (WTE) reduces about 2.3 tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for every 1 ton of waste processed compared to landfilling?

WTE helps prevent the release of methane and other greenhouse gases by diverting waste, reducing its volume, and recovering metals. At the same time, it converts waste into renewable energy that powers thousands of local homes and businesses.

Did you know that for every 10 truckloads of garbage that come into LCSWMA’s Lancaster Waste-to-Energy (WTE) facility, only one tractor load of ash leaves? That’s a 90% volume reduction!

The Ash is taken to our Frey Farm Landfill, where it is used as required daily cover (for non-combustible solid waste). WTE conserves land by reducing waste volume and using ash instead of soil.

Residents frequently ask us, “Is shredded paper recyclable?”

While shredded paper is recyclable, it is not one of the BIG 4 curbside recycling items. Shredded paper is almost impossible to separate at processing facilities and is easily contaminated. Not to mention, it can easily blow out of your bin and become litter. Check with your local recycling center for drop-off options that accept shredded paper.

Think about it:

Your trash never really “goes away,” it goes somewhere. According to the EPA, the average American generates 4.9 lbs. of trash each day.

Waste-to-energy (WTE) is a bridge technology that helps us reduce landfill burden, recover value, and give communities valuable time as they shift toward a more sustainable future.

How can you help?
1. Look for ways to reduce the amount of waste you create.
2. Reuse what you have or consider buying used items.
3. Recycle right by knowing what goes in your curbside bin and what can be recycled through special take-back programs.

Visit ThinkAboutWTE.org to learn more about the WTE process.
