In addition to the lake effect snows today east of the lakes, winds have begun to pick up. Gusts today may reach up to 45-55 mph across the area (2nd graphic), resulting in blizzard conditions due to reduced visibility from blowing and drifting snow. We are getting many questions on snowfall amounts, so here is some clarification. This will be a long lasting snow event, with several diffierent phases. In most areas, there will not be accumulating snow continuously for 3 days, it will come in numerous different batches. Map 1 is a 3 day total from tonight through Saturday. Map 2 is the first phase of the event from 7pm Wednesday to 7pm Thursday (general system snow followed by lake enhancent). Map 3 is from 7pm Thursday to 7pm Saturday (mainly lake effect snow). Take a close look at the times on each map.

In addition, water on paved surfaces from snow that was melting on contact earlier today may freeze, resulting in icy stretches on area roads. Motorists should be prepared for slippery travel through the late afternoon and evening hours.

Take advantage of the fair weather today, because a complex storm system will generate significant rainfall across our region during the first half of the weekend. Rainfall that could exceed two inches in some areas would introduce the threat for flooding. This map shows the forecast rainfall amounts from Friday night through Saturday night.

01/08/2020

A fast moving lake effect snow shower will move across our area through mid afternoon. Expect a brief burst of moderate snow that lasts for 15-20 minutes. This will reduce visibility.
