The little library lives! Over the winter the library took a critical hit and needed a new door. (Possibly the worst damage since the woodpecker attack of '20.) But after some weekend renovations it has a new door and is back for more fun.

The library has been completely refurbished. While we are closed, we may keep making changes. However, it is better for you to stay home. We may be posting a picture of the library soon or updating some things on the page soon.

The little library is in the shed for a fresh coat of paint and some refurbishment. It's been up for almost four years now (first on Shirley Road and now on Highfield Drive) and it's held up pretty well. Time to fix that hole the woodpecker made

The Little Library made it through to the springtime! I added a book today: "A Man Called Ove" by Fredrik Backman.

The book is set is Sweden (the author lives in Stockholm) -- I liked it. Ove likes Saabs, and doesn't like like much else:

“Ove gives the box a skeptical glance, as if it’s a highly dubious sort of box, a box that rides a scooter and wears tracksuit pants and just called Ove “my friend” before offering to sell him a watch.”

“Ove glares out of the window. The poser is jogging. Not that Ove is provoked by jogging. Not at all. Ove couldn’t give a damn about people jogging. What he can’t understand is why they have to make such a big thing of it. With those smug smiles on their faces, as if they were out there curing pulmonary emphysema. Either they walk fast or they run slowly, that’s what joggers do. It’s a forty-year-old man’s way of telling the world that he can’t do anything right. Is it really necessary to dress up as a fourteen-year-old Romanian gymnast in order to be able to do it? Or the Olympic tobogganing team? Just because one shuffles aimlessly around the block for three quarters of an hour?”

There's an adaptation of the novel on Netflix right now -- it's in Swedish with subtitles. It's also being re-adapted for the US. It's hard for me to imagine Tom Hanks playing Ove -- like subbing him in for Jack Nicholson in "As Good as It Gets" or for Clint Eastwood in "Gran Torino." We'll see.

The little library had a visit from something today -- a woodpecker, maybe? Hope he found something he'd like to read.

Another vacation book: "Ready Player One" by Ernest Cline.

I heard about this book from a movie trailer -- Steven Spielberg directed a movie that will be released in the Spring. Definitely read the book first; I can't see how a movie will be anything more than a "Cliff's Notes" version of the book that will just skate through the plot and spoil the ending.

By coincidence I started watching the second season of "Stranger Things" last weekend before starting this book. Both are extremely heavy on 80's references: if you enjoyed the very faithfully reproduced arcade from the first episode of "Stranger Things, Season Two" this is absolutely the book for you.

The book very quickly sets the scene in a 2040's dystopia that's not too hard to imagine, and doesn't waste much time setting up the plot. It's a page-turner.

You may need to do some 80's research. For reasons you'll soon learn, I supplemented the book this week by watching "Ladyhawke" (Set in 1400 AD, starring Rutger Hauer, Michelle Pfeiffer and Matthew Broderick -- all with a synthesizer soundtrack. Very weird, not recommended.) and listening to "2112" by Rush. Fortunately I'd already seen "WarGames" a number of times, but you might want to enjoy that as well.

Definitely an interesting book. I enjoyed it and recommend it. 4/5 stars. - Russ

Adding some books I finished on vacation this week. First off is a book that I picked up knowing nothing more than the author: "State of Fear" by Michael Crichton. How could I go wrong with the author of "Jurassic Park", "Congo", "Andromeda Strain" and "Airframe"!

This book must have thrown his publisher into a state of panic. Ooh ooh: a "State of Fear", maybe.

I won't spoil it, but it's definitely one to read with a laptop by your side. As he points out in his afterward: the GIS website took down their climate data prior to 1880 after he published the book. The "Union of Concerned Scientists" maintains a web page specifically refuting his book.

If I had to decide between inviting John Kenner (from this book) or Joffrey Baratheon (Game of Thrones) to a dinner party...it's not an obvious choice.

It's not nearly my favorite Michael Crichton book, but it's interesting. 3/5 stars. - Russ
