The school resource officer at Van Wyck Elementary School and multiple deputies of the Lancaster County Sheriffโ€™s Office investigated a report of gunshots at or near the school on Charlotte Highway Wednesday morning, August 26, 2026, at 8:32 a. m. A teacher heard a sound she thought might be gunshots, activated her active assailant alarm, and locked her students and herself in the classroom. The school was locked down, and the school resource officer responded immediately to the teacherโ€™s classroom. As deputies arrived, a perimeter was established around the school. Other deputies began methodically searching the entire school and all spaces within the school. After a third sweep of the property, the building was found to be clear. No unauthorized persons were found on the property or observed leaving the property.

No one was injured during the event. Normal school operations have resumed. Based upon the initial investigation by the sheriffโ€™s office, it does not appear the sound heard was gunfire. There is no current threat to students or staff at Van Wyck Elementary School.

โ€œOur school resource officer and staff at the school responded immediately to this report of gunshots and followed appropriate protocols, policies, and training to ensure the safety of everyone present on the property,โ€ said Sheriff Barry Faile. โ€œAs soon as other deputies began arriving, the property was secured and thorough searches were done to make sure no one was injured or in danger. Iโ€™m very thankful this was not an actual shooting event. I really want to commend the administration, teachers, and staff of Van Wyck Elementary for their professional response to this incident. This call highlights the importance of the training our deputies and school district personnel regularly get to effectively respond to situations like this.โ€

Unfortunately, another Lancaster County resident has fallen victim to a phone scam, ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฌ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฆ๐จ๐ซ๐ž ๐ญ๐ก๐š๐ง $๐Ÿ•,๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ to someone pretending to be a member of the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office.

The scammer impersonated our patrol Captain, knew the victim's personal information, and falsely claimed there was a warrant for their arrest. The caller created a sense of urgency, convincing the victim that they needed to pay immediately to avoid being arrested.

Please remember:

๐Ÿšซ We will ๐๐„๐•๐„๐‘ ask you to pay using Bitcoin, gift cards, cryptocurrency, Cash App, Venmo, Zelle, or any other electronic payment method.

Investigators with the Lancaster County Multijurisdictional Narcotics Task Force arrested a Kershaw man Friday, August 21, 2026, and charged him with Trafficking Fentanyl 4-14 Grams, Trafficking Methamphetamine 28-100 Grams, and Trafficking Co***ne 28-100 Grams. Investigators were in the Kershaw area Friday morning following up on drug complaints and observed Claude Andrew Shields, 65, on a bicycle leaving an area under investigation. Shields was stopped on Fork Hill Road for not following the rules of the road for bicyclists.

After he was stopped and got off his bicycle, Shields walked behind a bush before approaching the investigator to talk with him. He consented to a search, and the investigator found approximately $1,500.00 cash in Shieldsโ€™ pocket. Another investigator arrived, and a bag was found behind the bush where Shields had just been. The bag contained 7.59 grams of suspected Fentanyl, 47.7 grams of suspected Methamphetamine, and 32.65 grams of suspected Co***ne. Shields was arrested and transported to the Lancaster County Detention Center, where warrants were served upon him. A magistrate denied bond for Shields Saturday morning, and he is still in the detention center. Shieldsโ€™ photograph and a photograph of the items seized are attached.

โ€œMost of our large seizures of illegal drugs come from houses or cars, and this bicycle case was a little unusual,โ€ said Sheriff Barry Faile. โ€œOur investigators are trained to expect the unexpected, and this time their instincts proved true. They removed several thousand dollars worth of dangerous drugs from circulation and made a big arrest in the Kershaw area.โ€

Xavier Antonio Twitty, 39, of Lancaster was arrested Thursday, August 20, 2026, and charged with Trafficking Fentanyl and Methamphetamine after the ex*****on of a search warrant at his home on Lymon Reece Road. The search capped off a months-long investigation of Twittyโ€™s drug activities including the sale of Fentanyl by Twitty.

Early Thursday morning, investigators with the Lancaster County Multijurisdictional Narcotics Task Force and the Lancaster County Sheriffโ€™s Office Special Weapons and Tactics Team went to Twittyโ€™s home with the search warrant. Officers knocked and announced their presence and received no response. Entry was made, and Twitty was detained without incident. No one else was home. During the subsequent search, investigators found 19.54 grams of suspected Fentanyl, 28.31 grams of suspected Methamphetamine, and pills suspected to be Methamphetamine and Hydrocodone. Twitty was arrested on two outstanding warrants related to his previous sale of Fentanyl, and additional warrants were served upon him later Thursday at the Lancaster County Detention Center based upon the drugs found during the search.

Twitty is charged with Distribution of Fentanyl, Trafficking Fentanyl 14-28 Grams, Trafficking Methamphetamine 28-100 Grams, Possession with Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine, Possession with Intent to Distribute Hydrocodone, and five counts of Possession with Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance in Proximity to a School or Park. Twitty had a bond hearing Friday morning. The magistrate denied bond, and Twitty remains in the detention center. His photograph and a photograph of the seized drugs are attached.

Sheriff Barry Faile said, โ€œThis investigation was opened months ago, and these narcotics investigators worked hard to successfully build a strong case. The timing was spot on, and Twitty was holding trafficking quantities of Fentanyl and Methamphetamine Thursday morning when the search was conducted. We hope Twitty is held in jail until we can get this case into court.โ€

The Lancaster County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's assistance in identifying a male and female connected to a shoplifting incident at the Costco in Indian Land that occurred on July 16, 2026.

During the incident, merchandise was allegedly concealed inside a baby stroller before leaving the store without paying. Investigators believe the male may be a Costco member; however, that information has not been confirmed at this time. The vehicle involved has several unique features that may make it recognizable.
