Even a little late, this recognition is well deserved.

During National EMS Week, I want to take a moment to recognize the dedicated members of Lancaster Fire-EMS.

I couldn’t be any prouder of the commitment our staff shows to this community every day. Whether answering calls at all hours, continuing their education, sharpening their skills, or working to improve the care we provide, their dedication does not go unnoticed.

Our EMS providers constantly push themselves to learn, grow, and better serve the residents and visitors of Lancaster. That commitment to continued learning, professional growth, and service excellence is what makes this department so special.

Thank you to every member of Lancaster Fire-EMS for your professionalism, compassion, and dedication to public service.

Happy EMS Week to our Lancaster Fire-EMS staff and to EMS professionals everywhere who proudly serve their communities each day. Stay safe and thank you for all you do!

Lancaster Fire-EMS was excited to have the opportunity to partner with the Lancaster PTO this year for their annual fundraiser. Through this partnership, the PTO was able to raffle off two rides to school in a fire truck! These rides were completed this past Wednesday and again today.

It’s partnerships like these that help strengthen the connection between public safety agencies, our schools, and the community we proudly serve. Being a strong community partner is an important part of who we are at Lancaster Fire-EMS, and opportunities like this allow us to engage with families and students in a positive and memorable way.

Our crews had an absolute blast participating, and we already can’t wait until next year!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 6, 2026
Brush Fire on Old Union Turnpike

Lancaster, MA – On May 5, 2026, at approximately 2:58 PM, Lancaster Fire-EMS was dispatched to the area of 438 Old Union Turnpike for a reported brush fire.

On arrival, crews were met with heavy smoke and quickly established command and obtained a thorough size up of the situation. The fire was deemed wind-driven and in an area with limited access, which made operations challenging right from the start.

Initial companies stretched handlines and started working to contain fire while additional resources were requested from mutual aid. Departments from Ayer, Berlin, Bolton, Clinton, Devens, Fitchburg, Harvard, DCR, and Leominster responded to assist. Also, drones from Harvard and Bolton responded to assist.

Crews worked together to contain the fire, establish control lines, and shuttle water due to the lack of an immediate water supply. Once the fire was deemed under control, personnel stayed on scene to mop up hot spots and complete overhaul.

The fire burned approximately 2.2 acres before being brought under control. There were no injuries and no structures were threatened. The cause of the fire was a failed solar panel in field adjacent to the wooded area which burned.

This incident was a great example of a coordinated effort that lasted several hours. I want to thank all of our mutual aid partners for their assistance and professionalism. I also want to recognize NVRDD for their support and coordination throughout the incident. A special thank you to Rehab 78 for assisting with firefighter rehab, including hydration and nourishment, which is critical during extended operations like this.

Chief Belanger
