It's graduation season! So, for this week's post we'd like to take a moment to salute all the students who've volunteered with us over the past 40 years.

Whether they were assembling Habitat "House-in-a-Box" homes for hurricane victims, raising awareness by working on affordable housing-themed school service projects, helping build homes on our construction sites, or supporting our efforts at the Lancaster Habitat ReStore, students have brought passion, curiosity, and energy to Habitat's mission. We hope all our student volunteers learned something new through their work with Habitat and found their time to be meaningful, fun, and educational.

We'd like to say congratulations to the Class of 2026 high school and college graduates! You've helped build brighter futures for so many Habitat families, and we wish you success on all your future endeavors!

Here are some photos of student volunteers throughout the years.

Did you volunteer with Habitat in high school or college? Share thoughts about your experience in the comments!

Meet Stephanie. Stephanie and her children will be moving into one of the five new, affordable homes currently under construction at our Linden Street Build in Columbia.

After a period of housing instability, Stephanie was able to get into Habitat's first-time homebuyer program and is now working to create a brighter future for her family.

“The opportunity that Habitat has given me, is like, saying it’s a blessing doesn’t even explain how I feel,” says Stephanie. “There are no words to explain how I feel given this opportunity. It’s a lot of emotions. So much joy.”

Thank you, Lezzer Lumber for your continued partnership and generosity!

Attention Lancaster City residents:

Did you know Lancaster City has an interim housing strategy?

A discussion of the interim housing strategy is on the agenda for tonight's City Council meeting which takes place at 6:30 p.m. at the Polite Council Chambers at City Hall (120 N. Duke St.) in Lancaster.

Local housing leaders including Lancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity President & CEO, Andrew Szalay, will be in attendance to share thoughts on the city's current housing landscape and the challenges of building in Lancaster.

Tonight's City Council meeting is a great opportunity to learn more about the details and progress of this strategy, as well as the barriers that exist to creating more housing opportunities, and it offers a chance to share your comments, concerns, and ask questions.

Can't make it in person? Email your thoughts to City Clerk Bernard Harris ([email protected]) and request that he share your email with Council.

Habitat supporters bring your questions, put on your Habitat T-shirt and head to the City Council meeting tonight!

Housing shapes who can stay in Lancaster County, who can afford to move here, and whether future generations can continue to build their lives here.

Local decisions around zoning and housing affect affordability, neighborhood change, development patterns, and access to opportunity, yet many residents never learn how those decisions are made or how to participate in them.

Join the Coalition for Sustainable Housing for Housing Advocacy 101, a three-part dinner and conversation series focused on helping community members better understand housing challenges, local decision-making, and practical ways to engage in local conversations about the future of Lancaster County.
Dinner is provided at each session.

June 24 • July 8 • July 22 • Free registration •
Limited seating.

For today's Habitat history post, learn about the incredible impact of the Lutheran Task Force.

Established in 1993, the Lutheran Task Force was comprised of more than 40 Lancaster County-based Lutheran Churches. Between 1993 and 2012, when the Lutheran Task Force was most active, they raised nearly $1 million from generous donations from local congregations and money leveraged from Thrivent grants to support Habitat builds. And hundreds of members from Lutheran congregations across Lancaster County came together to volunteer on Habitat build sites and many others supported the mission through their work on the Habitat board and various committees.

“It’s a very satisfying feeling to see that I’ve been able to help others get to their dreams,” says Wayne Gongaware (pictured below), a task force member, longtime Habitat volunteer, former Habitat board president and committee member. “Plus, part of my faith is giving back and helping others. That’s a major part of our Christian values: serving other people.”
