Do you have clients, students, or loved ones who seem to keep failing at life, no matter what is tried?

Many times, people who can't succeed at behavioral interventions are deemed stubborn, resistant, and in need of FURTHER work on their behavioral support plans.

๏ปฟIt's often assumed that their families are enabling them or not using the prescribed interventions correctly. Or that the client or student needs to try harder. But what if their brains prevent them from succeeding?

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) present themselves in many ways. Some effects are physical, and some are brain-based, shaping attention, impulse control, memory, and behavior. The brain-based ones are the most often missed.

Standard behavioral interventionsโ€”the ones most of our systems are built aroundโ€”don't work for this population. Not because the person is resistant. Because the brain wiring is different.

Put your hands together for Karizma Pomales, who won our Values in Action award this month!!! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿฝ

When conducting a special contact visit between a small child and his incarcerated parent, Karizma skillfully provided ways for him to make decisions and feel empowered while at Lancaster County Prison.

Karizma also ensured that the parent who brought him to the visit felt included in the decision-making.

It's very important that children involved in our Families Forward program know that they have the right to love and connect with their parent in prison, but that they also have the right to say no.

Karizma navigates many similar situations in her role supporting the parent in prison, their child/ren, and the children's caregivers, and she does it with healthy boundaries and respect for all parties.

Thank you, Karizma, for your impactful work on behalf of our community! ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿฝ

We are pleased to support fall programming at The Urban Well Studio at Saint James Episcopal Church! ๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿ

Recovery is broadly definedโ€”join them for yoga rooted in the wisdom of the 12 steps. From substance use disorder to perfectionism. . . take good care of yourself by signing up today.

**THE URBAN WELL STUDIO AT SAINT JAMES**
**Tuesdays in September 15, 22 & 29 | 5:30 - 6:45 PM**
**Yoga, the twelve steps, and a path for everyone to explore
healing and renewal in our daily lives.**

Led by Sarah Shelton, Urban Well Yoga Studio Coordinator, and
The Reverend Stacey Carpenter, Associate Rector at Saint James

The Practice of Recovery: Yoga, the 12 Steps and a Path for All is a three-week series exploring recovery, healing, and embodied practice in everyday life. This series is rooted in the wisdom of the 12 Steps, something that the co-founders of Alcoholics Anonymous believed everyone could benefit from.

Recovery is not limited to one experience or one path. Many of us are recovering from somethingโ€”alcohol or substance use, codependency, grief, stress, burnout, perfectionism, anxiety, illness, major life transitions, old patterns, or the places where we have felt disconnected from ourselves, others, our bodies, or a sense of meaning.

Through gentle yoga, reflection, breath, and conversation, this series offers a welcoming space to explore what it means to pause, listen inward, and take the next step toward wholeness. No prior yoga experience, faith affiliation, or recovery background is required. This series is donation-based and open to all.
