May 20th is World Bee Day! 🐝Pennsylvania is home to about 400 native bee species. It is important to protect and enhance native bee habitat as they provide critical pollination services in natural and agricultural systems. You don't have to be a beekeeper to protect bees and other pollinators, some ideas are:
🌸plant pollinator-friendly flowers (check out our other post on gardening for wildlife)
🐝avoid pesticide use
🌸build a solitary bee house

Happy Pennsylvania!

PA is home to diverse native plants, trees, insects, fish, birds, and mammals that originated thousands of years ago and thrive in mutual dependence. This native ecosystem provides us with natural resources that benefit our lives by enabling agricultural food production, recreation, fisheries, timber, and more.

By planting native species in our gardens and yards, we create vital food and shelter for native wildlife and pollinators critical to our food supply.

The BMP of the month for May is the Riparian Forest Buffer! Riparian buffers are areas covered by trees and/or shrubs located adjacent to and up-gradient from a watercourse or water body. Riparian buffers are normally laid out with trees closest to the streambank for stabilization, followed by shrubs for filtration. Grasses can be found along the edge of buffers to catch sediment and nutrients before they make it to the wooded buffer. Some benefits riparian buffers have on streams are:

🪱Increase organic matter for invertebrates to feed on
🌳Protect streambanks from erosion
🐟Regulate the temperature of the stream
🪵Filter nutrient runoff from entering the stream

Now is a good time for riparian buffers to be installed to allow the trees or shrubs to establish a good root system. For more information on how LCCD can assist you with riparian buffer implementation, contact Grace Chamberlain from our watershed department!

Last week some of the District staff helped plant a riparian buffer in the Pequea Watershed along Indian Spring Run with Chesapeake Bay Foundation through the CREP program. 🌳 This project connects multiple stream restorations along the tributary, increasing the beneficial impacts these efforts will have in the watershed!
