This weekend's snow storm is expected to bring a lot of heavy wet snow to the area. Please be careful while shoveling snow to prevent back or muscle injuries as well as heart attacks. Shovel small amounts to avoid these serious health concerns.

Additionally, we know what heavy wet snow means. Heavy wet snow and plowing operations means that mailboxes are much more likely to be knocked down. We promise that we are not targeting anyone's mailbox. Unfortunately, it is something that happens. Please review the attached pages to better understand the Township's snow removal policies and some Frequently Asked Questions. The information can also be found on our website at https://www.newgarden.org/DocumentCenter/View/154/FAQ---Snow-Removal-PDF?bidId=.

With the latest upcoming weekend snow storm, we ask like always for everyone to stay home unless absolutely necessary to allow us to keep the roads passable during the storm and then get them cleaned up after the snowfall stops.

Crews are monitoring the storm and will be in as soon as the snow starts to stick. We will treat all the roads with salt and then switch to plowing operations. During plowing operations we make one pass in each direction to keep roads passable but not necessarily clear. With snow fall rates expected to be 2"+ per hour, keeping clear roads just isn't possible.

Crews plan to work through the night with a short stop for some rest overnight and then we will be back at it again to open roads and keep them open until the storm is over. Once the storm ends, we will start pushing back everything, clean up intersections and cul-de-sacs, and apply another round of salt.

We are expected to get anywhere from 6" to 22" of snow, depending on which weather forecast you watch so please be patient with us while we work to get the roads cleared after the storm.

Storm update.

All Public Works crews came in at 2am ready to start with fighting the snow and ice. Once the snow starts, we will be out salting the roads. It is expected to accumulate quickly so when the first round of salt is complete, we will transition to plowing operations.

Especially with a storm this size, our main goal is to keep everything passable, not completely clear. Our plow routes take about 3 hours to run start to finish so it may be a while before you see us again. We will continue making one pass in each direction throughout the day and around 10pm when the storm is predicted to end, we will switch to clean up mode and work through the night. During clean up mode, we push everything back to the curb and clean up intersections and cul-de-sacs. When each road is pushed back, we will apply another round of salt to start the melting process.

With the low temperatures during and after the storm, it is important to note that salt isn't nearly as effective and will take extra time to melt everything. At 30*, 1 pound of salt will melt 46 pounds of ice, however, at 1*, 1 pound of salt will only melt 4 pounds of ice.

During the storm, please stay home unless you absolutely need to travel. That will allow us to keep the roads passable during the storm and get them cleaned up following the storm.

Looks like another long weekend for us. Please go over the shared announcement to keep you safe and to help us get the roads clear as quickly as possible.

Please see the announcement below regarding the expected inclement weather this weekend.

Weekend Winter storm update.

After working most of Saturday for the first winter storm of the weekend, crews were back out at 5am on Sunday for the second winter storm. All Township roads were treated with salt and once the snow accumulated, we switched to plowing. During the lull in snow crews got some much needed rest but were back in at 5pm for the second round of snow.

This one was much more intense than forecasters predicted and heavy traffic with numerous accidents, slowed snow clearing.

As of 1:30am, all roads have been scraped off and salted, again. With the low temperature tonight, the salt will not be as effective so if you are traveling, use caution as there could be some slick spots.

With the sunshine and temps in the mid 30s tomorrow, most of the ice should melt. However, overnight temperatures as low as 8* for the next two nights, it is possible that some areas refreeze. so once again, please travel with caution.

Time for a 9am update.

Crews came in last night at 9pm in preparation of the storm. Around 10pm when the snow started falling, we were out salting the roads. Shortly after that, we switched to plowing operations where we plow one pass in each direction to keep everything open.

We have completed three rounds of that already and now that the storm is wrapping up, we will transition to "cleaning up and pushing back." That is where we make several passes on each road to push back the snow to the edge of the road or the curb line. We also clear intersections and cul-de-sacs and throw on final coat of salt down.

The roads are still slippery so please stay home unless you have to go out to allow us time to get everything cleared off. Also please remember, that with the colder temperatures, salt isn't as effective especially with light traffic on it so it will take time for all the roads to be completely cleared.

!!!!7PM UPDATE…. Hillendale Road has been reopened!!!!

***Hillendale Road Closure - August 12***

Hillendale Road will be closed one last time today to through traffic for the wearing course between roughly 6:30am to 6pm between Newark Road and Chambers Road and also between Chambers and Thompson Road, depending on where they are working at any given point throughout the day. We know this isn't the best timing with some of Hillendale Road being used for the Thompson Road detour but I think we can all agree that Hillendale Road is in serious need of some love and the final product will be well worth the temporary inconvenience.

Milling operations will also be done on Highland Court and Hillside Lane in Bancroft Woods.

During the road closures, please obey all signs and flaggers' directions. While the roadways will be closed to through traffic, residents will be able to get to and from their houses but you may have to do that from a different way than normal. Please let flaggers know where you are trying to get to and they will get you there with as little inconvenience as possible.
Weather permitting, the tentative remaining paving schedule is as follows:

Wednesday 8/13 – Base Repair Highland Ct., Hillside Lane. (Portmarnock Dr. if time allows)
Thursday 8/14 - Place wearing Course Highland Ct., Hillside Lane and Portmarnock Dr.
