The Lander Volunteer Fire Department conducted its monthly training for the month of May.

Firefighters focused on air pack training, during which they used their air bottles until empty while performing physically demanding activities. This hands-on exercise gave each individual a better understanding of how long their air supply lasts and how their body reacts while operating on air under physical stress.

The second part of the training involved firefighters working through all of the department’s trucks to become more familiar with truck layouts and equipment locations. Each firefighter drew an item at random and then had to locate it on the apparatus, helping improve familiarity with tools and equipment for faster response during emergencies.

Today members of the Lander Volunteer Fire Department are currently conducting our annual NFPA hose testing to ensure all fire hoses are safe, reliable, and ready for service when our community needs us most.

Testing helps verify that our equipment meets National Fire Protection Association standards and can perform under the demanding conditions firefighters face on emergency scenes.

A big thank you to all of our volunteers who dedicated their time and effort to complete this important task!

May 10th–16th is Home Fire Sprinkler Week.

Fire can spread through a home in less than two minutes. Home fire sprinklers help stop fires before they grow, protecting lives, pets, and property.

Home fire sprinklers:

• Respond quickly to heat
• Can control or extinguish a fire early
• Work together with smoke alarms for added protection
• Help reduce injuries and damage

The Lander Volunteer Fire Department is proud to support fire safety education and encourages everyone to learn more about modern home fire sprinkler systems and how they help keep families safe every day.

Here is a demonstration on sprinklers the Lander Volunteer Fire Department did on October 13, 2016.

Today, May 1st, we recognize May Day—an important reminder in the fire service.

“Mayday” is the call no firefighter ever wants to make. It signals that one of our own is in trouble and needs immediate help. It’s a word that carries urgency, teamwork, and the commitment we make to always look out for each other.

At Lander Volunteer Fire Department, this day is a chance to reflect on the risks our firefighters face, the training that prepares us, and the bond that keeps us strong.

Please take a moment today to think about the men and women who serve, and the dedication it takes to answer the call.
