The Wind River Cultural Centers Foundation (WRCCF) is thankful for the generous support of donors who have supported our efforts to foster community engagement through history at the Pioneer Museum. Past donations have supported the “I Light History” campaign that is allowing the Pioneer Museum to install permanent, high-quality exterior lighting on their buildings.

This year the WRCCF is thrilled to allocate donations toward developing new exhibits, improving facilities and increasing awareness and involvement within Lander. Your support is vital in helping us achieve our goals and positively impacting the Pioneer Museum and the greater community.

We urge you to make your contributions through Challenge for Charities (C4C) before the July 10, 2026 deadline. By doing so, you not only support the Wind River Cultural Centers Foundation initiatives for the Pioneer Museum but also take advantage of the matching donation opportunity provided by our dedicated group of Challengers.

Last Thursday May 21st during the spring snow storm a magpie decided to wait it out on a horse collar under the covered porch at the Seipt house at the Dubois Museum. The photo was taken by Seth McFarland.

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, was first observed May 30, 1868. The Grand Army Republic (GAR) was a fraternal organization started by Union Civil War vets, and they helped to get Memorial Day recognized as a national holiday.

The picture is of the local GAR post here in Lander, during a picnic held on what is now South Fifth Street area.

From a Clipper Article of September 1887 taped to the back of the photo:

"The photo of the G.A.R. encampment taken by Baker & Johnson, a few weeks ago, is a fine picture, and reflects great credit upon the artists, as well as the Post, the Band and all connected. The old color bearer, with his white beard and silver locks (Mr. A. McPhaden) stands out very prominently in the picture, and is a true type of the men who bore the brunt of the battle when to carry the stars and stripes was an honor sought for by the brave. "
