This weekend (weather permitting), firefighters from the Landrum Fire and Rescue District will partner with the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) during the Dark Corner Classic Car Show for the annual “Fill the Boot” fundraiser.

If you attend the car show, be sure to stop by our tent, say hello, and help support a great cause. Firefighters will have boots available for donations, along with community risk reduction and fire safety information for families and visitors.

For decades, firefighters across the country have proudly supported MDA and the families they serve. Every donation helps fund research, care, support services, and summer camp experiences for children living with neuromuscular diseases.

Cash donations are always appreciated, but for those who prefer to give electronically, we’ll also have a QR code available for easy online giving during the event. For those who can't attend the car show but still want to donate, just click the link here: https://filltheboot.donordrive.com/teams/21685

We’re proud to support this important mission and appreciate our community’s continued generosity and support.

This Memorial Day, the Landrum Area Fire and Rescue District pauses to honor and remember the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who gave their lives in service to our country.

Their sacrifice secured the freedoms we enjoy every day, and we are forever grateful for their courage, dedication, and selflessness.

As we gather with family and friends this holiday weekend, we encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day and remember those who never made it home.

We especially honor the military veterans and families within our own community whose sacrifices continue to inspire us.

From all of us at Landrum Area Fire and Rescue District, thank you to our fallen heroes. We will never forget.

In an emergency, firefighters, paramedics, and law enforcement need to locate your home as quickly as possible. Clearly visible address numbers can make a real difference when every second counts.

The Landrum Area Fire and Rescue District encourages homeowners to check their address visibility this week.

Ensure house numbers face the street and are easy to read.

Consider reflective or lighted numbers for better nighttime visibility. (We sell reflective address signs for $20 each, and you can purchase them at our headquarters at 200 N. Trade Ave.)

Remove branches, shrubs, wreaths, or decorations that may block the view

Make sure numbers contrast with the color of your home or mailbox

This is especially important in rural areas, during storms, or on roads with limited lighting.

Take a quick look tonight. If you were responding to your own home after dark, could you find the address easily from the road?

With warmer weather arriving, many people are plugging in fans, window air conditioners, and other appliances that may not have been used in months.

That increased electrical use can create fire hazards if outlets, cords, and power strips are overloaded or damaged.

The Landrum Area Fire and Rescue District encourages residents to take a few minutes to check their electrical safety at home:
• Don’t overload outlets or power strips
• Avoid using extension cords as a permanent setup
• Inspect cords for fraying, cracking, or exposed wires
• Pay attention to outlets or plugs that feel warm to the touch

Electrical problems often give warning signs before they become serious.

If you notice heat, sparks, flickering lights, or a burning smell, unplug the item and have it inspected before using it again.

Staying alert to small issues can help prevent a much larger emergency.

Today is International Firefighters’ Day. It's a day to recognize the dedication, service, and sacrifice of firefighters everywhere.

Here in the Landrum community, we’re proud of the men and women who answer the call day and night. Many of our firefighters have deep roots here, serving not just as first responders, but as neighbors, friends, and familiar faces in the community.

Whether it’s responding to emergencies, training to stay prepared, or supporting local events, their commitment runs far beyond the fire station.

Today, we simply want to say thank you to our team and to firefighters everywhere who serve with courage and heart.

Lithium-ion batteries power a lot of what we use every day. They power phones, cordless tools, lawn equipment, even e-bikes and scooters.

They’re convenient, but they also need a little extra awareness. When these batteries are damaged or improperly charged, they can fail quickly and cause fires that are difficult to control.

As you’re using and charging devices around your home or shop, keep these safety tips in mind:
• Stick with the manufacturer’s charger and avoid off-brand replacements
• Don’t charge devices on beds, couches, or other surfaces that can trap heat
• Try not to leave batteries charging unattended, especially overnight
• If a battery is cracked, swollen, or not holding a charge, it’s time to replace it

If something doesn’t seem right (like excessive heat, a popping sound, or a chemical smell) move the device away from anything that could burn and give us a call if needed.

A little caution now can help prevent a dangerous situation later.
