I’ve been struggling to find the words to explain how I felt about Charlie Kirk’s assassination. Over the last few days, anytime I tried to write something I would be flooded with a variety of emotions.

And the thing is, I never really followed him or his organization before. But he was doing something I do regularly, talking to crowds of people and working to persuade them. But most importantly, he leaves behind a family that in many respects, mirrors mine. I held my daughter extra close Wednesday evening.

Charlie built an organization to promote dialogue and speech. Something that the 1st Amendment guarantees against the State as a way to prevent violence. His assassination is a direct affront to any peace and civic-minded American. He literally just wanted to have conversations. And some young man thought that was worthy of ending his life over.

While more will come out in the future about the assassin, his motives, and inspiration, we must as a society turn down the rhetoric. We need to identify what is radicalizing our young people and work to build a culture against it. And that starts with ending the glorification of assassins and actively cheering on the death of public figures you disagree with.
