Thursday Evening Storm Update

A storm will be rapidly developing off of the Delmarva Peninsula Friday evening. There will be a very sharp snowfall gradient with this storm. Over 12 inches of snow is currently expected over coastal New Jersey, with only an inch or two of snow 50 miles northwest of Philadelphia. If the forecast track of the storm varies just a little from reality, this will make a very big difference in snowfall accumulations.

As of the latest forecast, expect snow to overspread the area on Friday evening, from 5pm-10pm from southwest to northeast. The snow will become steadier and heavier, especially from the I-95 corridor, south and east. Snow will continue until Saturday afternoon, especially areas along and southeast of I-95. The snow will taper off and end later on Saturday.

The attached image is the latest National Weather Service forecast.

I'll provide updates as needed.

Thursday Evening Update -

A fast moving storm will pass to the south of the Philadelphia region late tonight and early tomorrow morning. This track will cause snow to develop across the region late tonight and tomorrow morning. The snow will be heavy at times overnight and will taper off and end around daybreak in most areas. Expect a general 2-6 inches in most areas, with the heaviest snow in interior south Jersey up through the central and northern beaches.

Sunday Evening Update

It has been a mild winter so far and it is still very warm. But, as a reminder that it is still winter, a quick hitting winter storm will be affecting the area early tomorrow morning through the afternoon, especially areas from Philly and south. A storm will be rapidly developing off of the southern Delmarva peninsula tonight and then moving rapidly out to sea.
Temperatures will fall rapidly this evening to below freezing by morning. Rain will develop and change to snow from north to south by morning in most areas. Snow will be heaviest in Delaware and South Jersey. Some places in those areas may get up to 6 inches of snow. From Philly on north and west, expect only a dusting to an inch. Expect the mild pattern to return after the storm.

Hello from Maine!

This is the wintry scene of our back yard this morning.

So far, this Meteorological Winter has been warmer than normal for most of the continental US. The Pacific jet stream has been very strong the past few months providing lots of beneficial moisture and snowpack in the Pacific coastal states. A strong Pacific jet stream causes the coldest air to be locked up in Canada. This pattern is expected to continue for the foreseeable future. So, it will continue to be milder than normal for a while. It has also been very dry in the mid Atlantic states recently.

Here, in Bangor, there is some snow on the ground and ice in the trees, but it is warmer and has been relatively tranquil for this time of year.

I will continue to monitor the weather in the Philly and NJ areas. Even though it’s probably going to end up being a warmer than normal winter, there will be the possibility of wintry weather from time to time.

Be safe. Happy Holidays!

Spring-like weather visited our area today.

This is the visible weather satellite image from this afternoon. It shows that the snow cover is gone from most of Delaware and Southern New Jersey. If the weather stays mild and we get some rain, the snow will disappear over areas further to the north in the next few days.

Wednesday evening winter weather update.

Expect snow to develop across our area between 5am to 8am. Snow will become moderate to heavy by late morning into the early afternoon. Along and southeast of the I 95 corridor, the snow will mix with and change to sleet and freezing rain by evening. Mixed precipitation will continue off and on until Friday morning. Most locations will receive 3-6 inches of snow and sleet, some places to the north and west might get as much as 8 inches.

It will be cold this weekend, but the cold and stormy pattern will be relaxing over the next couple of weeks. Expect milder weather to return in a week or so.

I’ll have updates as required.

Saturday Afternoon Winter Storm Forecast

Expect light snow, sleet and freezing rain to develop this afternoon and continue into early Sunday morning.

A weak storm system over the South, will move rapidly northeast by our area this afternoon into tomorrow morning. The atmosphere is very cold near the ground, but has warmed significantly aloft. This situation is a recipe for icing.

Expect spotty snow to develop and gradually become mostly sleet and freezing rain by this evening. Temperatures will remain in the 20s through tomorrow morning, so anything that falls will freeze on untreated surfaces. There may be some significant icing on trees and powerlines. Fortunately, it will not be windy.

After this winter weather event, it looks like we will be entering a milder pattern in which the next few storms will be mostly rain.

I'll provide updates as needed.

2/2/21 Winter Storm Update

Fast-moving winter storm coming through on Sunday.

Unlike the previous storm that lasted for days, the upcoming storm will produce precipitation for only about 9 hours. A rapidly moving storm will move just south of our area and off the coast on Sunday.

Snow will develop before sunrise from from southwest to northeast across the area. Snow will become heavy at times during the day. Temperatures will be near freezing during the storm, consequently, this will cause the precipitation to mix with, and change to rain in some areas, especially across South Jersey and near the shore. As, usual, the rain/snow line will set up 10 miles either side of the I-95 corridor. Depending on where the transition to rain sets up, this will cause accumulations to to be less than predicted in those areas.

Generally, 4-6 inches of snow will fall over the Philly and NYC areas. Expect the precipitation to taper off and end between 1-3pm.

Attached is the latest snowfall forecast from the National Weather Service.

I'll provide updates as needed.
