Thank you to the members of Bird Safe Bucks for their informative presentation on migratory birds at a recent Commissioners’ Meeting. Migrating birds often fly at night but can become disoriented by bright lights. By turning off exterior lights at night, residents can protect birds from fatal collisions with windows and buildings.

Rake the leaves onto the flower beds this fall instead of bagging them, and go easy with the spade.

A bumble bee queen may already be asleep in there. The Xerces Society says mated queens burrow only an inch or two into the earth to hibernate for winter, and that an extra thick layer of leaves is welcome protection from the elements. The Bumblebee Conservation Trust adds that queens favor north-facing spots, where the winter sun will not warm the ground and wake them too early.

Every bumble bee you see next spring starts with a queen like her. 🐝

The Shade Tree Commission and Environmental Advisory Council will meet on Thursday, Oct. 8.

The meetings will be held in the second floor community room of the township municipal building, which is located at 188 Lincoln Highway, Fairless Hills.

The Shade Tree Commission meeting will begin at 7 p.m. The EAC meeting will follow at the conclusion of that meeting.
