Michigan has received $14.8 million in AmeriCorps funding and based on AmeriCorps’ unique model, the grants will leverage an additional $10.2 million in matching funds from the private sector, foundations and other sources, increasing the return on the federal funds, and bringing the total investment to $25 million.

It will support the work of nearly 950 AmeriCorps members as they tackle some of the state’s toughest challenges, including disaster services, economic opportunity, education, environmental stewardship, education, health and public safety.

Workers and employers are urged to become familiar with two key updates to Michigan’s unemployment law that will benefit those filing appeals or requesting a financial hardship waiver.

New provisions:

Allow workers and employers to request combining multiple cases into a single hearing, reducing the need to attend separate hearings. This also will reduce delays that could impact benefit payments or employer operations and add efficiency to the appeal process.

Increase the frequency an individual can request a financial hardship waiver to avoid paying restitution, providing more options for relief from having to repay benefits.

REMINDER! Tomorrow, two LEO leaders will be joining the lineup at the University of Michigan Eisenberg Family Depression Center's 7th Annual Workplace Mental Health Conference on Wednesday, Aug. 5.

Randall Harrison, Acting Senior Deputy Director of Labor, will explore how LEO's Healthy Work, Healthy Mind initiative is equipping employers with tools and strategies to strengthen workplace mental health. He'll also share how the LEADS (Learn, Educate, Act, Deploy, Study) framework complements this statewide effort to improve employee well-being.

Cheryl Bergman, Executive Director of the Michigan Women's Commission, will discuss why supporting employees through perimenopause and menopause is an important workplace mental health and employee retention strategy.

21 workplace fatalities have been reported to MIOSHA so far in 2026.

Recent incidents are a reminder that workplace conditions can change quickly. MIOSHA urges employers and workers to:

▪ Stop work when conditions become unsafe

Michigan has received a $5.1 million federal grant to launch a program that will prepare at least 680 justice-involved adults for in-demand careers in advanced manufacturing, construction and infrastructure, shipbuilding and maritime manufacturing.

The Michigan Reentry Employment in Skilled Trades, Advanced Manufacturing, Registered Apprenticeships, and Training (MiRESTART) initiative will establish a coordinated, statewide reentry workforce program providing services across all 83 counties. LEO received the $5.1 million U.S. Department of Labor grant award in partnership with the Michigan Department of Corrections, the Michigan Works! Agencies and the Workforce Development Institute.

Michigan is making it easier for skilled trades workers to turn hands-on training into college credit. Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II celebrated LEO’s College Credit for Apprenticeships Program that allows Registered Apprentices to earn college credit toward an associate degree or technical certificate, helping more people on a path to higher wages, career advancement and lifelong learning.
