Coronavirus Food Assistance Program 2 | Farmers.gov: Resources for Farmers and Producers

Coronavirus Food Assistance Program 2 (CFAP 2) provides producers with financial assistance that gives them the ability to absorb some of the increased marketing costs associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. USDA will accept CFAP 2 applications through December 11, 2020. Learn more at farmers.gov/cfap or call 877-508-8364 to speak directly with a USDA employee ready to offer assistance.

Coronavirus Food Assistance Program 2 will provide direct relief to eligible producers who have suffered losses due to COVID-19.

Mountain pine beetles affect pine trees by laying eggs under the bark and introducing a blue stain fungus. The state of Michigan is expanding quarantines to try to stop a pest from killing hemlock trees. Michigan’s 170 million hemlock trees are important because they help prevent erosion along streams and keep them cool, which helps fish habitat.

Friday was the 83rd anniversary of Public Act 297 of 1937, Michigan’s first Soil Conservation District law, enacted to provide a local response to the soil erosion catastrophe of the 1930s Dust Bowl, coupled with extreme drought nationwide.

The scope and responsibility of Michigan Conservation Districts have grown since then far beyond the original focus of agricultural soil quality, including invasive species management, optimizing forestland habitat, safeguarding water quality and quantity, providing conservation education, recycling support, farmland protection and more.

Agricultural Safety Grant Program Application is Live!
The State of Michigan has allocated $15 million of CARES Act funding to support the needs of our farms and agricultural processors. Funds will provide $1,000 per employee to help cover the costs related to COVID-19 testing, PPE, facility needs, sanitation, employee training, and upgraded safety procedures for farm-provided housing.
Applications to apply for funding are now available at: www.michiganbusiness.org/agsafety.

This past weekend on Saturday, May 19, The Study Farm was the location of the Northern Michigan Farm and Forest Scout Day. It was a rainy one but 42 Boy and Girl Scouts came for the day and learned about forest management and farm animal science. One of the presenters was Erin Satchell (MAEAP verifier) who spoke about MAEAP and protection surface and groundwater on a livestock farm.
Lakeside Farm outside of Boyne City had a special visitor this week. The owner of the farm Dave Skornia is standing with our Govenor Rick Snyder who came by for a tour. Lakeside Farm is the second farm in Michigan to be verified in 4 systems. How awesome is this!!!!!!
