Now that it's June, our office is again taking nominations for District 76's Teacher of the Month program. We will be taking a pause from teacher nominations during summer break and we will resume the nomination program when school is back in session in the fall.

What a great Saturday. The Senior Healthy Aging Fair was fantastic. We gave away more than 100 bags in 15 minutes. Great speakers. Great informational booths and fantastic treats and coffee from Flour Child Bakery. I even had my mom, my sister Denise, my husband Bruce and my oldest fun friends Lisa and Brian stop by. I appreciate all the kind words and the time you spent with us today. Special thanks to Jocelyn, Yvonne and Maggie for putting together a great event to honor our seniors.

Congratulations to our May Teacher of the Month, Kailey Farrand! Kailey is a second grade teacher at Washington Elementary School in Charlotte.

I often think how fortunate I am to represent such a diverse district. Last night I celebrated one of our youth advisory council member’s graduation and then decided to drive through the rural part of our district. I drove past some of my favorite farms. It’s such a beautiful sight to see the acres and acres of new growth. Farming is Michigan’s second largest industry and arguably one of the most important as they grow the food we eat.

It was a beautiful night and I stopped by my son and daughter-in-law’s mini farm to see my brand new grandson. Blessings all around us.

Also last week, I met with Tammi from Nutrition Zone to present the March Small Business of the Month award. This is such a cool spot in the Eaton Rapids community, and I especially enjoyed their puzzles and quilts. Last Friday after my coffee hour in Eaton Rapids, I presented the April Teacher of the Month award to Tiffani Lyon (Eaton RESA).

Tiffani, it was great to meet you, your colleagues, and your students. Your hard work and dedication as an educator and leader are very appreciated and deserving of recognition. Thank you for what you do every day for your students and the entire Eaton County community.

I spoke at the Older Michiganians Day event this week hosted by the Tri-County Office on Aging and the Area Agencies on Aging Association of Michigan on the Capitol lawn. While it was very cold outside, there was still a fantastic turnout of people gathered to advocate for the issues that matter most to older adults, caregivers and families.

In my own work as a state representative, I sponsored and passed the bill to repeal the retirement tax in our state, helped negotiate a state budget that supports home and community-based services, brought home funding for the new Delta Township Senior Center, voted to continue funding for Meals on Wheels, and raised wages for direct care workers as the Chair of the House Appropriations Committee last term. In addition, I also host my annual Healthy Aging Fair every spring to connect constituents with the community resources available to them.

Now more than ever, Michigan’s seniors need our support. I am committed to fighting for the policies that protect seniors’ finances, health, community and access to care. Thank you again for having me as a guest speaker!
