MABA was pleased in recent weeks to welcome our 2026 summer interns, Allie Tilt and Karle Welden, both students in Michigan State University’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Throughout the summer, Allie and Karle will support MABA’s policy, communications, events, and member engagement activities while gaining firsthand experience in Michigan’s agribusiness sector. We are excited to have them on our team and look forward to their contributions in the months ahead!

The Michigan Agri-Business Association (MABA) is pleased to welcome two Michigan State University students, Allie Tilt and Karle Welden, as summer interns for 2026. Yesterday's groundbreaking for Chobani's major, $567 million expansion of its Norton Shores, MI La Colombe Coffee facility is incredible news for Michigan agriculture. This investment is especially positive for our state's dairy farmers and all those working with them across animal nutrition, ag retail, transportation and beyond.

In addition to creating hundreds of West Michigan jobs, this project will greatly increase the company's milk purchases, from around 30 million lbs. annually to 615 million lbs, cumulatively, in the coming years.

Our MABA team was glad to be part of Tuesday's special event alongside Michigan dairy farmers, local Chobani employees and a bipartisan group of local, state and federal leaders. A highlight of the day was hearing directly from Chobani CEO Hamdi Ulukaya about his incredible journey of entrepreneurship and his people-focused leadership that has steered Chobani to where it is today. We thank Chobani for partnering with Michigan agriculture and look forward to what the future holds.

We appreciate all those who joined Tuesday’s Ag Club Breakfast in Lansing! MABA was glad to welcome special guest Erin Mies with People Spark Consulting for a presentation at breakfast. People Spark has led two different workshops for our members this year, providing important leadership and workplace communication insights. Programs like yesterday’s are made possible in part by our 2026 Sustaining Sponsors, so we also took a moment yesterday to recognize and thank them for supporting the association’s efforts.

On Friday we enjoyed heading to Hart, MI in Oceana County, the asparagus capital of the world. Michigan Asparagus cohosted the MABA Ag Club breakfast held at the West Michigan Research Station. We appreciated the growers and MABA member company employees who joined us and helped spotlight West Michigan’s specialty crop industry! “Michigan is a long-time dairy state (with) an incredible amount of knowledge and expertise that gives dairy manufacturers confidence in a high-quality product,” said Chuck Lippstreu, president of the Michigan Agri-Business Association, noting the infrastructure exists to support multi-generational dairy farms, making the state “a favorable place for investment.” Read more below.

West Michigan’s dairy industry is experiencing an investment boom, with companies pouring more than $1.3 billion into new production capacity across the region since last summer as they bet on Americans’ growing appetite for protein-rich foods and specialty dairy beverages.

Four major projects announced since June include Coca-Cola subsidiary Fairlife LLC’s $650 million expansion in Coopersville and Chobani’s $567 million investment in its La Colombe operations in Norton Shores, both backed by tens of millions in state incentives. The expansions will add hundreds of jobs and vastly increase demand for milk from Michigan’s dairy farms.

In 2025, the Michigan Milk Producers Association announced an investment of up to $122.7 million in production facilities in Wheatland Township and Ovid, and in Holland, Hudsonville Creamery and Ice Cream Co. announced a $40 million expansion to support growth in its novelty ice cream bar category.

Michigan is home to 460,000 dairy cattle that produced 12.5 billion pounds of milk in 2025, placing the state sixth in the nation. The state’s dairy production has grown significantly in recent years. In 2017 Michigan produced 11.2 billion pounds of milk from 428,000 dairy cattle.
