Investing in childcare and early learning is one of the best investments we can make in our future.

I am proud to continue this commitment having introduced legislation to codify and expand Tri-Share and Care-Share to help more parents access affordable childcare and giving them peace of mind knowing their children are safe, supported, and learning while they work.

Yesterday, I joined Superintendent Joseph DiPonio, board members, staff, volunteers, and families from Lake Shore Public Schools for the grand opening of the new Community Center and Early Childhood Center!

I walked the halls with the children and parents. Their faces were so bright and excited. I visited the rooms with tiny tables and chairs and sensory toys. I enjoyed the parks and recreation spaces and even played a little bit of pickleball with the high school students.

This incredible project would not have been possible without the vision and dedication of administrators, school board members, staff, parents, community members, and partners, including my colleague Senator Kevin Hertel, who secured the $1.25 million state grant that helped make this investment a reality.

This new Center will serve families for generations to come, featuring classrooms for early learners, GSRP programs, and recreation spaces for children, young adults, and seniors.

This Center is more than a building —it is a community hub where families can learn, grow, connect, and thrive.

I'm excited to see this Center become a cornerstone of the community and to watch families enjoy all it has to offer for years to come.

One of the highlights of today's grand opening of the new Lake Shore Public Schools Community Center and Early Childhood Center was getting to test out the new pickleball courts with some of the Lake Shore High School students!

I haven't played competitively since my high school tennis days, but it turns out those skills still come in handy. Even better —I managed to hold my own while wearing wedge heels!

Beyond the fun, it's exciting to see this new Community Center and Early Childhood Center come to life. Investments like these create spaces where people of all ages can learn, play, stay active, and build community together.

I can't wait to see families, students, and residents enjoy these new amenities!

Congratulations to the Lake Shore Public Schools on the grand opening of the new Community Center and Early Childhood Center!

This incredible project would not have been possible without the vision and dedication of administrators, school board members, staff, parents, community members, and partners at every level. A special thank you to Senator Kevin Hertel for championing the $1.25 million state grant that helped make this investment a reality.

Michigan’s natural resources are not unlimited. Once a wetland is filled, a habitat is destroyed, or air quality declines, the impacts can last for generations. That’s why environmental protections matter, not just for protecting wildlife, but for safeguarding our drinking water, public health, and quality of life.

I voted “no” on these bills today because I believe Michigan should remain a leader in environmental stewardship:

-HB 5501 would make it easier for wetlands to be replaced or relocated rather than preserved in their natural state, despite the important role existing wetlands play in flood prevention, water filtration, and wildlife habitat.

-HB 5536 would reduce the number of wetlands subject to state regulation and limit the ability of local governments to adopt stronger wetland protection ordinances that reflect local needs.

-HB 5557 would weaken certain air quality protections, raising concerns about increased pollution and potential public health impacts, especially for children, seniors, and those with respiratory conditions.

Michigan is blessed with the Great Lakes, thousands of inland lakes, rivers, forests, and wetlands. These resources are part of our economy, our identity, and our responsibility. We cannot create more clean water, more wetlands, or more breathable air once they are lost. Protecting the environment is about ensuring that future generations inherit the same natural treasures that we enjoy today.

As your State Representative, I believe economic growth and environmental protection go hand in hand. Our communities deserve both a strong economy and a healthy environment. These bills are not it.

Michigan House Republicans are not even hiding that they don’t care about Michigan families’ financial situation. Just like their President said “I don’t think about Americans' financial situation.”

Instead of addressing real issues hurting Michigan families, they put up bills that undermine parents and physicians’ ability to make medical decisions for their patients. None of these Republicans are doctors, either by the way.

Here are the facts:

-Michigan gas prices average $4.27 per gallon.

-Grocery prices are up 2.9% over the past year, food prices overall increasing 3.2%, making it harder for families to keep up with everyday expenses.

-Michigan's unemployment rate stands at 5.0%, above the national average of 4.3%, and the state has lost approximately 51,000 jobs since December 2025.

-Child care remains one of the biggest barriers to workforce participation, preventing many parents from returning to work and making it harder for employers to fill open positions.

-Housing affordability continues to be a challenge as families face higher mortgage rates, rising rents, and a shortage of available homes.

-Michigan's manufacturing economy continues to face uncertainty from tariffs, supply chain disruptions, and rising costs that affect workers, small businesses, and consumers alike.

These are the real issues that Michigan families are facing everyday. People want affordable child care, good-paying jobs, lower costs, and the opportunity to build a secure future.

As your State Representative, I remain focused on policies that help families get ahead, strengthen our workforce, and grow Michigan's economy for everyone, not dumb bills that are meant to stroke egos, stoke fear, play to their base, and control parents and families, their doctors, or spread hate and division.

Today I welcomed Recreation Authority Roseville & Eastpointe Director Tony Lipinski to the State Capitol during the Michigan Recreation & Park Association Advocacy Day.

Parks, trails, recreation programs, and community spaces do so much more than provide places to gather, they improve quality of life, support public health, strengthen local economies, and create opportunities for families and children to connect and thrive.

The work of recreation and park professionals often happens behind the scenes, but their impact is visible in every playground, walking path, sports field, splash pad, and community event that brings people together.

Thank you to our city workers, volunteers, and members of the Michigan Recreation and Park Association, for your advocacy and for championing investments that make our communities stronger, healthier, and more vibrant.

As a state representative, I remain committed to supporting policies and funding that help expand access to quality parks and recreational opportunities for all Michigan families.

"Childcare is a workforce and economic issue," Rep. Mai Xiong (D-Warren) said. "If parents cannot afford childcare, they cannot work. Businesses lose out on workers, parents cannot generate income, and our state's economy suffers."

Yesterday I had the opportunity to meet with our firefighters from Warren and hear directly about the challenges facing first responders back home and across Michigan.

Their priorities are straightforward and rooted in public safety:

đźš’ Ensuring firefighters can advocate for safe staffing levels and workplace safety.

🧠 Expanding support for PTSD and mental health resources for the men and women who experience trauma in the line of duty.

🇺🇸 Providing paid military leave for firefighters who also serve our nation in the armed forces.

These are common-sense policies that support the first responders who put their lives on the line to protect our communities every day. When we invest in our workers, we strengthen public safety for everyone.

I am committed to doing everything in my power to advance our shared priorities, and I am proud to be a cosponsor of legislation that will help make them a reality.

Thank you to Joel and Adam, and the firefighters who visited the Capitol and took time away from their families and duties to advocate on behalf of their fellow firefighters back home. Your dedication to serving others extends far beyond the firehouse, and I appreciate your leadership and advocacy on behalf of firefighters across Michigan.

Together, we can ensure our first responders have the support, protections, and resources they deserve. 🚒🇺🇸

Today my House Democratic colleague State Representative Julie M. Rogers and I introduced legislation to make childcare more affordable in Michigan, without raising taxes!

We are in an affordability crisis.

Families are paying more at the gas pump, in the grocery store, on housing and on energy costs.

Our legislation codifies and expands Tri-Share and Care-Share, lowering costs for families, workers and businesses.

Childcare is a workforce and economic issue. If parents can’t afford childcare, they can’t earn a living, businesses lose out on workers and our state’s economy suffers.

As a working parent of four young children, I know the struggle every parent faces as they balance raising a family and working. I am committed to providing Michigan families relief now.

This package helps address both issues and brings relief to Michigan families and ensures a robust workforce.
