Michigan Recognized as a National Leader in Transforming High School!

At this week's State Board of Education meeting, students and staff from Grand Rapids Public Museum School shared how their hands-on approach to learning — using hundreds of thousands of local artifacts and archives — is reshaping what high school looks like.

Michigan is now one of just 13 states to meet 6 of 10 policy goals identified by XQ Institute in its new report, "The Future Is High School," for making high school more rigorous, engaging, and career-connected. No state met more than six.

Sophomore Lady Friend shared how a project exploring Grand Rapids' African American history changed the way she learns: "It helps me learn more, because I'm the type of person who needs something in front of her, and I need to be able to interact... and have a strong connection with [people]."

"Michigan has put Students First by transforming the high school experience so our youth can be better-prepared to excel in rewarding careers," said State Superintendent Dr. Glenn Maleyko.

This progress supports Goals 4 and 5 of Michigan's Top 10 Strategic Education Plan — expanding secondary learning opportunities and increasing high school graduation rates.

Congratulations to Grand Rapids Public Schools and educators statewide for this achievement!

Today's Michigan State Board of Education meeting featured something special — a live demonstration of the We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution program, presented in partnership with the Michigan Center for Civic Education (MCCE).

Students from East Grand Rapids High School and East Kentwood Public High School stepped into the role of constitutional scholars, delivering prepared testimony on the significance of the Declaration of Independence as the nation marks its 250th anniversary. State Board members then took on the role of a Congressional panel, engaging the students in six minutes of thoughtful civic dialogue — and the students didn't miss a beat.

Their poise and depth of knowledge reflect the impact of MCCE's We the People program. Research from Georgetown University's Civic Education Research Lab shows this program leads to measurable gains in civic knowledge, communication skills, and community engagement across grade levels.

Congratulations to these rising civic leaders and their educators!

Awesome!

We want to welcome back staff and students to the Michigan School for the Deaf (MSD) as they begin a new school year! Last night, we were thrilled to participate in another successful open house to greet families and bring together MSD's community of supporters.

Welcome back to all students across the state. Have a great school year!
