🎉🎉Happy National Farm to School Month!!!🎉🎉

October is National Farm to School Month, an annual 31-day campaign to recognize, appreciate and celebrate the connections happening across our country between kids, families and their community food systems. National Farm to School Month was designated by Congress in 2010, making this year’s campaign the 10th anniversary of National Farm to School Month celebrations. However, this October looks very different than the previous nine years.

It Takes a Community to Feed a Community, and that’s been especially true this year. As our schools and early care and education sites, communities and food system continue to be impacted by the pandemic, we are approaching this year’s campaign as an opportunity to honor all those who contribute to feeding our kids and communities – from farmers, harvesters and food hub distributors, to school nutrition professionals, educators, garden coordinators, bus drivers and more. This year, it’s been made very clear that the workers who keep our kids fed—many of whom are Black, Latino, Indigenous and other people of color—are often unseen, underpaid and undervalued for the contributions they make in our communities. Yet they’ve always been essential, and we know farm to school wouldn’t exist without them.

That’s why this October, we’re focusing our National Farm to School Month campaign on expressing appreciation and amplifying underrepresented voices in order to shift power to these essential workers and create a more just food system.

Here’s how you can get involved:

USDA Provides Flexibilities to Ensure Kids Receive Meals This Fall - U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue announced a range of nationwide flexibilities to ensure America’s children receive the nutritious food they need throughout the upcoming school year. These waivers give states, schools, and childcare providers time to plan for how they will serve children in the fall, including allowing for new and innovative feeding options as the nation recovers from the coronavirus. https://icn.ms/2ZdxUG2

BIG NEWS! 10 Cents a Meal for Michigan’s Kids & Farms was restored in the 2019-2020 Michigan budget! The governor signed it on Friday. It’s not statewide expansion yet, but it preserves the program’s infrastructure and affirms the value of supporting our schools in purchasing locally grown produce for our children in school meals. Big thanks to Sen. Wayne Schmidt for staying the course on funding, and Governor Whitmer for following through. Now, on to the 2020-2021 budget, and our hopes of getting the program expanded statewide. Be sure to educate your candidates for the Michigan House primary that’s coming up on August 4! “As the country re-opens and #schools prepare for the fall, a one-size-fits-all approach to meal service simply won’t cut it. The flexibilities announced today give states, schools, and child care providers the certainty they need to operate the USDA child nutrition programs in ways that make sense given their #local, on-the-ground situations and ensure America’s children can count on meal service throughout the school year.”– Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue https://www.fns.usda.gov/news-item/usda-030820 #COVID19

We are happy to announce the USDA Farmers to Families Food Box was a huge success in Dearborn, Michigan at the Islamic Center Of America! This past week, in collaboration with U.S. Department of Agriculture and Governor’s Office, we were able to distribute thousands of produce boxes to the Islamic Center Of America. With these food boxes, they were able to serve over 1500 cars and thousands of families. There were cars lined up over 2 miles, for hours. We are proud to be a part of this collaboration to help the communities we serve. We will get through this together. #michiganstrong #giveback #community

As part of the federal response to COVID-19, a program called "P-EBT/Pandemic EBT" was announced. P-EBT provides food assistance benefits to Michigan families that participate in free or reduced lunches at school.

Farmers markets and direct marketing farmers that participate in the SNAP Bridge Card program are automatically eligible to be able to accept P-EBT. MIFMA has created a P-EBT fact sheet and printable "P-EBT Accepted Here" signage to help spread the word about this new program.

The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is pleased to announce that an online map has been developed for families to find locations where meals are being provided during this period of school closure. The map can be found at: www.mcgi.state.mi.us/schoolnutrition, and will be updated twice each day during the closure period. These meals, served under the program called Unanticipated School Closure Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), are available to all children at no cost. Up to two meals per day may be served to all children ages 0-18. This includes students with disabilities ages 18-26 with an active individual education program (IEP). This program assists Michigan’s school districts and community partners to ensure that kids receive nutritious meals during the school closure announced by Governor Gretchen Whitmer on March 12, 2020. Information around the COVID-19 outbreak is changing rapidly. Learn more at http://bit.ly/38V7dsM and get Michigan #COVID19 updates at Michigan.gov/Coronavirus.
