More than a decade after a life-altering accident, a Navy veteran was awarded a 100% U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) disability rating with assistance from a Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA) veteran service officer (VSO). The long-awaited recognition has provided the veteran with financial stability and access to critical care, allowing him to focus on his health and bring awareness about substance use and recovery among fellow veterans.

“I am four years alcohol free and continue to stay active in my recovery by utilizing the many resources available,” said Beauchamp. “I cannot say enough about the MVAA and Eric’s amazing work. He has become such an important resource for so many and I look forward to seeing him continue helping veterans.”

82 years ago, 150,000 Allied soldiers landed on the shores of Normandy in what would be the largest amphibious invasion in history. Also called Operation Overlord, D-Day would mark the beginning of the end of World War II and the liberation of German-occupied Western Europe.

June is PTSD Awareness Month.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that some people develop after experiencing or witnessing a life-threatening event like combat, a natural disaster, a car accident or sexual assault. It's estimated that 7 out of every 100 veterans will have PTSD in their lifetime. It's important that they know they are not alone.

If you are a veteran in need of assistance, visit Michigan.gov/MVAA or call 1-800-MICH-VET (1-800-642-4838). If you are in crisis, dial 988 then press 1.

As a reminder, May is Mental Health Awareness Month and though today is the last day of the month, the conversations don't stop here. Each year, the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA) helps fight the stigma, educate the public and advocate for policies that support veterans with mental illness and their families.

The MVAA's Link2Life program operates as a bridge to life-saving resources for Michigan veterans and their families. Link2Life is open to all veterans from any branch of the United States Uniformed Services, along with families of enrolled participants. To participate, veterans can call the MVAA’s Michigan Veterans Resource Service Center at 1-800-MICH-VET (800-642-4838).

Please note that the Link2Life program is not a substitute for the Veterans Crisis Line. If you or a loved one is in crisis, dial 988 and press 1 to talk to a caring, qualified responder.
